If you are taking a class that uses this book, find another class. If you entire school is using this book, demand otherwise.

This is by far the worst book I have ever used. The book spends most of the time discussing issues that are common sense such as "Taking a customer's Order" or "Bill the customer" In a chapter devoted to Sales and Collection Process in the AIS environment. Which might seem reasonable. But then asks questions like:

In a systems flowchart, which of the following is most likely to be depicted with a predefined process symbol?
a. Browse catalog
b. Make bank deposit
c. E-mail client
d. None of the above.

The book defines what a predefined process is in Chapter 6. But gave no examples of it. So I have a infer from the little tid bits as to what the correct answer might be.

Here is another question from the same chapter.

Which of the following internal controls should Bonnie implement in the first step of the sales/collection process?

a. Data encryption
b. Separation of duties
c. Lockbox system
d. Bank reconciliation

Again no support for this question in the chapter. It talks about internal controls, but never mentions which one should be first,

Is this a biography? Is this fiction? Is this an exemplification essay? A manifesto? A homage to a lineage of survivors and a testimony for generations to come? All of these, to be sure, elegantly interwoven into a trepidatious narrative that takes the reader through flashbacks, flash-forwards and transitions from pre-war Poland bourgeoisie to the unfolding of the Nazi rule against the Jews, the hazardous building of a society in Israel and the unusual destiny of a family in the US. The reader is invited to share highlights of various aspects of the author's life, including intimate details of experience, richly illustrated by photographs, postcards and other personal documents. The plot surfaces here and there like the ferocious, enigmatic Moby Dick. In response to Melville's famous opening line "Call me Ishmael", this book's title can unmistakably be guessed to reply, in an anguished whisper, "Call me Israel".

Telling the truth is a powerful, and dangerous thing. Not telling is more dangerous. Arie Livne (aka Al Birch) chose to take the risk of revealing an accurate look at his world. His first book, Criminal Democracy is largely a very personal telling of a family, a time, and a culture worth knowing.

Children of the Holocaust, this Jewish family has lived through a perilous world, has survived and has succeeded. Livne provides an insider view of his Israel and how its powerful elite have misused their power. In the United States we don't think of Israel - the State of God's Chosen ones - as corrupt, but here it is. After several probable Israeli government attempts to destroy his family, Livne uses the best weapon he has to protect his family - his truth - this story.

The English edition reveals Livne's Hebrew way of speaking and thinking. This is simply written, and compelling. The book's main audience is probably Israeli nationals, who thought they knew their world, that is, until Livne unveils its unhealthy underside. He had to make the choice - to quietly not provoke these dangerous officials, or to reveal it all. He chose the latter, and I hope his family is safer for it. They now have a published legacy in Criminal Democracy.

If you like true stories, of present day and recent intrigue, and of a captivating time and place which is rapidly disappearing in the minds of its living witnesses, this should be your next read. I recommend it highly.

Don't expect a highly polished, well edited story here. On the other hand, the historical facts of the time period make for a most compelling story. The story is shared in a most heartfelt manner about the travails of life and overcoming adversity.

Not a strong finish

After waiting for the final book, I am sad to say that it left me disappointed. The plot was predictable and the way she finalized the characters' love stories was too abrupt and harsh. Fyn's jealousy reminded me too much of Lence and not like the Fyn we came to appreciate. Orrade and Byren's estrangement left me uneasy. Byren becoming cold and harsh like Lence and Cobalt, not acting so much like the Byren we saw before. The near virgin pregnancy of Florin with the way she acted like a love sick puppy, not like the strong mountain girl she was originally cast as. All this just left me upset with the events of this book.

Characters left w/o completion

I loved the series, the chracters, the worlds, but I didn't feel like she wrapped up her storyline well w/ all the characters. Granted, I know you have to stop somewhere w/ a novel, but tie up the loose ends. You're left hanging w/ some main characters, and the no apparent reason appearance of Garzik, though engaging and wonderful, still leaves me baffled. I was disappointed she left Piro w/o a solid conclusion, and Byren loses everything. Her character development was beautiful and the story growth.

The autobiographical novel by Sylvia Plath, describing her painful ordeal when she becomes mentally ill is such a book.
This could have been a thoroughly depressing and self centred story in the hands of another and many may assume this when reading the blurb.

Her battle with mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) and her eventual recovery is written so honestly, so brilliantly I was more than impressed.
Of course there is sadness in the aftermath of the book because we know she actually took her own life at aged thirty, the same year The Bell Jar was published.
The world is a little worse off with the loss of this wonderful talent.
Anyone who has any inkling of how The Black Dog can grab you by the scruff of the neck from out of the blue will appreciate this book and anyone who simply enjoys outstanding literature will be equally impressed.

The Bell Jar is Sylvia Plath's only novel and chronicles one woman's descent into a deep and dark depression. Esther Greenwood is an incredibly intelligent and wonderfully peculiar student with an ambition to become a great writer. She is in college and also doing an internship at a magazine which she hopes will lead to her being discovered. It is while doing this internship that she begins to feel more and more disillusioned with the world and increasingly detached from her own existence.

Plath handles Esther's emotional problems with tenderness and understanding. Esther is not treated as overly emotional or hysterical and neither is she babied - Plath treats her with the respect that all depressed people deserve. I also thought that Plath handled the coming-of-age theme masterfully. It is often in our youth, particularly in our early twenties, that we begin to feel overwhelmed with the amount of choices we must make. Choices we know could have irrevocable consequences for the rest of our lives. It's not easy figuring it all out and I think most readers will be able to relate to the hunt for something solid to hold onto as well as the quest to make a meaningful contribution to the world.

Esther is that rare unforgettable protagonist that crawls deep into the reader's mind and heart and begins to feel like an old friend.

It already feels like it’s been a part of me for a decade

This book completely surrounded me, and I can’t believe I haven’t read it before this year. It already feels like it’s been a part of me for a decade. Yes, it’s depressing, but it’s so real. I felt everything in a very melancholy, all-consuming way. And it was wonderful. I found lines from the book floating into my mind as they related to my life. This novel sat on my heart for a very long time.

I'm amazed at how contemporary it felt. She talks about scenarios that still play out today (Post-grad blues, sex taboo, etc.) I think it mainly felt contemporary because she is so blunt and honest. And so poetic. What an amazing read.

About the Author

Patricia Rush has over 30 years of teaching experience in Spanish, the last 15 at Ventura College where she is a Spanish instructor and former Department Chair.� Her BA and MA degrees in Spanish are from California State University, Los Angeles.� She has traveled extensively throughout the Spanish-speaking world, focusing on Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica and Cuba, and has directed International Studies programs.

�

She was a coauthor on Mosaicos, 2E, Trato hecho, 2E, Spanish for Health Care and Spanish for Business.� She was awarded a LLAMA grant (Language Learning and Multimedia Applications) from IBM for the use of technology in language instruction.� In 2000 she was selected “Teacher of the Year” by the EOPS program.� She directed the Migrant Education Program in the Alhambra School District as well as the Gifted and Talented Education Program, and has served as Dean of Students and Vice Principal in charge of Curriculum.� Her administrative internship was in Vocational Education, where she developed course outlines for Spanish for Medical Personnel, Law Enforcement, Social Services, and the Workplace; she possesses a TESOL certificate for instruction in English as a Second Language.� Her various presentations on language methodology at ACTFL and CLTA (California Language Teachers’ Association) have been well received.�

Patricia Houston has been a Dean, and Department Chair of Languages at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. She holds a Bachelors degree from Syracuse University and a Masters from the Universidad de Las Americas in Mexico. In addition to Spanish language instruction in academic and business settings, she has been a corporate trainer for private industry and the government. Long interested in applied language studies, she was a founder of the Pima College Translation Studies Program and coauthored several language textbooks, including the Spanish At Work series. During her career as an instructor, Patricia has won a variety of teaching awards on local and national levels.

Not as described -- CD not included

I really wish I'd been more careful in reading all the reviews, but I was in a hurry. Now I'm going to have to send this book back to Amazon, and buy it at the university bookstore. Despite the description very clearly stating, "An audio CD-ROM program accompanies the student text," no CD is included. Amazon should know that when people are buying an item online, sight unseen, they need to be able to have absolute confidence that the item truly is as described. You failed big time on this one, Amazon. The description needs to be rewritten, explicitly stating that this is the main book only, and no CD is included.

Description of text is not accurate

"An audio CD-ROM program accompanies the student text." Not.

I ordered a new copy specifically because the description on Amazon's website says that an audio CD-ROM is included, and since I'm taking the class online, I thought it was worth the extra money to get the CD. No CD is in the book, so I'm not happy about the price for a book with no CD.

This book sucks

I'm only renting it, but the condition was pretty bad. This is not a book for beginners. There is a pre chapter before the actual first chapter that covers basics like the alphabet and numbers, but they totally switch it on you and you have to read full dialogues and articles in the first chapter on, and some exercises require you to respond with complete forming sentences!
