About the Author
Charles Kovacs was born in Austria. He left his native country in 1938 at the time of the Anschluss and joined the British Army in East Africa. After the War, he settled in Britain, and in 1956 he took over a class at the Rudolf Steiner School in Edinburgh, where he remained a class teacher until his retirement in 1976. He died in 2001. His extensive lesson notes have been a useful and inspiring resource material for many teachers. He is the author of Parsifal and the Search for the Grail (2002); Ancient Greece (2003); The Age of Revolution (2003); and Ancient Rome (2005).

Humanistic point of view

We have read other books in our homeschool situation by Kovacs and he has a very humanistic style. He is a Waldorf teacher so there is a strong connection with all that we read to what it is to be human. He compares the Romans to the Germanic Tribes who wiped them out... by saying that if you saw a Roman in the street, you would certainly give him respect as he would hold himself erect with dignity. But the Germanic tribesman would march towards you in such a manner that you would want to get out of his way for his strength and dominance would be intimidating. This enables the child to grasp the full meaning of how different these two cultures were. It is simple, but I have never seen a text book that had such a point of view. It cements the information, the feeling sense of these two cultures, concretely into the student's mind. These are things children will remember for years to come.

Very clear introduction

This book will not solve all of your problems as you most likely will need advanced mathematical and statistical books relative to your specific area but it's the best foundational math book I've ever read. You can very quickly find useful topics that you may have forgotten and it's a great intro to the more advanced topics. The statistics chapter was so clear and helpful for an overall perspective and then you can find more advanced applications in dedicated textbooks. A very practical primer for any scientist; I love this book. I also wish it were available on Kindle with "audio enabled."

This big, complex novel detailing the beginnings of the downfall of the Roman Republic is a startling change of pace for McCullough ( The Thorn Birds, LJ 5/1/77). Gaius Marius, an upstart New Man from the Italian provinces, and Lucius Cornelius Sulla, a patrician Roman brought up in the slums of the Subura, are both ambitious enough to want to become First Man in Rome, despite their social handicaps. The author deftly weaves politics, family rivalries, and battle scenes into a riveting story replete with fascinating details of everyday Roman life. The research is obviously painstaking; the author includes a large glossary of more than 100 pages as well as a pronunciation key for the Roman names. Highly recommended. The best historical fiction I have ever read

Nothing prepared me for the complexity, depth and shear sense of reality that Colleen McCullogh's The First Man in Rome provided. I have read a lot of historical fiction and was used to authors routinely ignoring the real nitty gritty of daily life in previous ages in order to get on with their story. McCollogh manages to infuse a lively plot with a significant amount of period lore, domestic detail and even hitorical exposition without ever losing the reader's interest. Her characters and their story - taken straight from history - manage to be both larger than life and believably human at the same time.
Among the devices she uses to achieve a kind of verisimilitude are imagined conversations, letters, and maps (drawn by her own hand). Where there are unknowns in the historical record, her inventions are based on careful research and are, if not correct, certainly plausible.
I can't praise this book (and the four that follow it in the series) highly enough. Standing in the remains of the original forum in Rome last year, I felt as if I had actually experienced that place before. So much of the story told in these books takes place in the limited confines of the forum and the nearby Palitine and Capitoline hills, and her description of the space was so accurate - even with the passage of two thousand years - that it was easy to imagine how it must have looked then.
Anyone who loves historical fiction - that is, real history presented in novel form - owes it to themselves to experience this book. It is both a work of scholarship and a great imaginative achievement written by a master of language. No story totally invented could be half as interesting as this tale of real people that McCollough brings to life in these pages. A great book.

Brilliant historical fiction.

This is a great book. It presents the reader with a dazzling image of ancient Rome, in fact I literally felt transported back to the Rome of the time of Marius. After reading all of McCullough's "Masters of Rome" books (those written as of this date) this one is still my favorite. I've read a fair amount about Rome, but no book that I have read has ever explained Rome's politics and social structure half as well as this one.
Marius is shown as what he was: a giant. I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with McCullough's portrayal of Sulla, but each reader can make that decision for him or her self. This book covers the time period as from shortly before the Jugurthine War (which I never really understood until I read this book) to slightly after Marius' conquest of the German tribes. But this isn't just a book about wars. McCullough takes the readers into the Senate, into private conversations of Roman (and foreign) leaders, and really tries to get at the guts of what was going on in the Roman Republic at this critical stage of its history. Mostly, she succeeds brilliantly.

A wonderful book, one of the best in the series

I throughly enjoyed "The First Man in Rome". It is a great historical novel with timeless appeal. So far, I have read three novels in the Masters of Rome Series, the other two were "Caesar's Women" and "Caesar: The Novel". Of these three, "The First Man in Rome" is the best.
I especially enjoyed the characters in this novel. While "Caesar", for example, was completely devoid of character development, this novel is overflowing with wonderful and well-structured character portraits. I was particularly impressed by Sulla. Instead of portraying him as a wild psychopath that he undoubtedly was, Colleen McCullough turned him into a psychopath with a tender side. Her description of his childhood and especially his relationship with his tutor brought tears to my eyes. Although Sulla is quite despicable in his action, McCullough uncovers a complex person under all the madness. A great achievement!
I also appreciated her depiction of Gaius Marius. In history class, I learned that he was extremely lucky but rather unremarkable in his talent. That never sat well with me because I thought that even if he wasn't a genius, he must have been capable enough to secure the number of consulships that he had. McCullough very nicely goes into Gaius Marius' head and examines how and what is driving him.
Not all the characters were well-developed. Julia or Julia Major was extremely boring and could have used more complexity because she appears to be such a paragon of virtue that she does not seem human. Jugurtha also suffered because in the book he is too one-dementional. That's too bad since he is quite fascinating.
Most other characters are sublime: from Metellus Numidicus (Piggle-wiggle) to Scaurus to Saturninus to Julilla or Julia Minor to Drusus to Aurelia. At first, I was against the idea that McCullough create Julilla but after reading "The First Man in Rome" I realized how well she served the author's purpose. Also, her ordeal is quite heart-breaking.
I was a little bit disappointed by Colleen McCullough's depiction of the political scene. Everyone who read Masters of Rome series said that the best political novel in the series is "The First Man in Rome". I disagree. Although McCullough writes wonderfully about political squabbles in Rome, she mostly uses letters and dialogues between characters to relate these events to the readers. Although she is extremely good at letter- and speech-writing, in "Caesar's Women" she actually describes what goes on as it happens. This helps with absorbing the atmosphere and also captivates the readers better.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Roman political history or Ancient history in general. The Masters of Rome series is superb and I hope Colleen McCullough will continue to add on to the series for many years to come.

Sorely Needs an Editor

Henry Stevens' book is based on research that includes, mostly, documents from the National Archives; a fair share of which are printed in this volume. This is commendable and makes for very interesting reading. The book consists of generally short chapters - some shorter than others - and reads like a long list, which it is. This isn't a bad thing, especially if some of the chapters don't interest you, skipping them won't be any problem.

That said, I found an average of 1 misspelling or typo per page, sometimes more. German names are often misspelled, and Stevens keeps saying "inspire of" for "in spite of", which, while cute, gets on my nerves. Other gems include: "Deny-ability" for "deniability" and a host of others. Virtually not a single page is free from such mistakes.

Another annoying thing is that the text is not justified on the right; that means it's not aligned and looks nasty. It's possibly the first time I witness such a thing in a printed book.

None of the above bode well for the publishers, and I must admit this isn't the first time a book is poorly edited and printed; I'm thinking of Farrell's books, which, while FAR LESS flawed, still contain mistakes that an editor should see. (That said, if Farrell makes one mistake, Stevens makes 60, to keep the comparison fair.)

The end of the book has Stevens thank his wife for proofreading and editing. Well, that explains that, but I recommend getting an actual editor next time. I won't get into punctuation errors and such, but I will mention that some of the block quotations aren't even formatted properly: there's a block quotation, then it comes back to normal, but it's actually still part of the quote... Sometimes quotation marks open but never close... A mediocre job of editing, to be sure.

Is this book worth it? It's far inferior to Farrell's work on the subject. It's more concise, but it doesn't make for thrilling reading, and one reason for this is that Stevens somehow assumes everyone is a physicist and doesn't take any time to explain the basics which would enable any reader to have a general idea of what's at stake. This makes for long, tedious passages where the reader has no clue what's being dealt with. I wouldn't recommend this book if this is your first time into this sort of material. Farrell's *Reich of the Black Sun* would be a better starting point. Where Stevens makes a long list, Farrell organises his information into a coherent whole. I know the subject isn't similar in scope but Farrell covers much of this material in his own books as well, and probably quotes Stevens as well (I don't remember for sure).

If the book wasn't so poorly edited, it may not be so bad, for this type of material, credibility is essential, and writing "effects" for "affects" or "it's " for "its" or "who's" for "whose" definitely does not inspire (not "inspite of", this time) trust, and it looks damn amateurish.

More pieces of the puzzle

The author has done his research. Official documents lend credibility to all of his claims about secret German weapons developed during World War II that still remain little discussed and little researched partly due to the fact that it was not until the fall of the U.S.S.R. that certain pieces of information came to light in Germany. Shortly afterward, the Americans began declassifying relevant documents. The other thing that discouraged research was the ridicule heaped on those who even mentioned such things as lasers developed during the war. But, if these things were never made then there would be no reports concerning them, and other fantastic things. A worthwhile book, and a definite addition to the library of anyone who has been putting the puzzle together regarding weapons, devices and discoveries made by the Germans during the war.

"A Deliciously Delightful Addition to your "Hannah Collection"

If you love, love, love Joanne Fluke and the Hannah Swensen adventures in and out of her bakery/caf�'; "The Cookie Jar" and have many times regretted that you didn't jot down a tempting recipe from one of her books...Regret no longer!! Your wishes have been answered with "The Lake Eden Cookbook". Besides tried and true collected recipes
from approximately nine editions, this cookbook encompasses much, much more! You will find so much to enjoy and use; from snippets from some of her beloved books, baking tips, notes by Hannah, Lisa and even Grandma Knudsen, in addition to the mountain of recipes for mouth-watering goodies from appetizers and easy one dish meals to muffins, pies, cakes and of course, cookies, and beyond. I'm enthralled by the no-bake cookies at the moment and intend to make "Norwegian Chocolate Pizza" among others, as soon as the weather cools around our corner of Northeastern Pa. Not what I expected, yet highly enjoyable

(even though I am about on par with Andrea in terms of cooking abilities--who knew that you had to take the innards out before cooking a chicken, or that there was even such a thing as a $100 cooking pan/dish/thingy you could so terribly scorch in the course of making Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that it would be ruined...)

Seriously though, somehow I expected this to be the Lake Eden cookbook that was getting put together by Hannah for publication during the last few books. I expected, well a cookbook, including recipes that made enough sense that I might be able to do them (or convince my more kitchen-savvy husband to try). Reading the Hannah books always make my mouth water and I was looking forward to having the recipes in one place to wave under my husband's nose.

Instead this is a series of recipes from the books (like I wanted) organized by type but located in between little snippets featuring the local residents (and yes, Andrea had yet another funny cooking attempt story). A bit of a Lake Eden bonus it turns out.

Oh, and I read the Kindle version...and I was happy to see the footnotes were hyperlinked. In the regular books there would be asterisks and it was not intuitive for me to find the comments as all the asterisks were lumped together at the end (or was it the beginning) of the book in one section. Ultimately you could figure out the nut comment went with the recipe containing nuts, but it was not a simplified process. This book has numbered footnotes and they jump you right to the appropriate comment and, with a touch of the back button, you are where you left off. Much improved formatting!

All I can say right now is mmmm....cooooookies...

Great little stories tied together

I love reading this series but especially this book. It was like getting to visit with friends. There are many little stories between the recipes (which as always are tempting and I can't wait to try). There is no murder or mystery but that is fine. Joanne Fluke did a great job of making it more than a cookbook. I am amazed at her talent for weaving stories and food together. Thank you Joanne.

A good read if you are a fan of Vikings on History Channel! (If you want to get an idea of future episodes in the series.)

The book is easy to read for the most part. It marks where things were translated and gives the full translation or description at the end of the chapters. I was interested in reading this, as most people will be, because I am a fan of Vikings on History Channel. I wanted to know more about the stories told about Ragnar and his sons out of interest and also to figure out where the show is going.

I will try to avoid any spoilers here. If you are a fan and want to know what is ahead, it's worth the read, although the History Channel is able to take creative license in a good way because there are some conflicting stories about Ragnar and a lot of gaps in time that were not filled in. If you are familiar with the show and Vikings in general you know that there is no written history left by them during the Dark Ages.

The information we have, and that was used to write this book is from several sources, including Christians who were raided by the Vikings, having a very biased view of them, oral tradition and stories handed down, etc. From the book and other sources that the people in the stories including Ragnar and his sons, although there are no written records by the during their time, there are records of their descendants after.

It is interesting how warlike the culture is with scant resources in the Dark Ages with no written records, yet they were well ahead of their times, treating women more equally in some ways than other countries and cultures.

It was worth the purchase and read to me. (I bought it on Kindle.) There are other books that have similar stories or are complimentary in the Saga Packs. They are very reasonable purchase price on Kindle as well if you want to read more.

dead-on tabs for Alter Bridge's first album

I've been playing guitar for 17 years, and I usually hate tab books. Why? Well, they're usually very innacurate. Not this one, though. I picked up Alter Bridge's debut CD, 'One Day Remains' back in the Fall of 2004. Creed was good, but I couldn't really stand the singer's attitude and stage presence...or his overdramatic vocals, for that matter. Needless to say, I was completely blown away by Alter Bridge. I was thoroughly impressed with Mark Tremonti's guitar work, and I added this CD to my growing list of "CD's that are go great I have to learn every song".

This book contains all the goods. All of the classic riffs are there, and the solos are tabbed out flawlessly. Mark Tremonti and Troy Stetina (Tremonti's guitar guru) worked through the songs and the book wasn't shipped until every song was signed-off by them. Get it! You won't regret it!

Great, accurate book for advanced guitar players

From what I've seen, this book provides provides flawless information. The solo on the track "Open Your Eyes" could probably be played in a simpler fashion than the book describes, but book is otherwise flawless.

I would definitely not recommend this book for beginner guitar players or even moderately-skilled ones. Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti is a very skilled guitarist and composes much more difficult songs than he did one the first three Creed albums. Moderately-skilled guitarists should have little problem on the track "Broken Wings" as it is probably the simplest song in the book.

For those with the ability to play Alter Bridge songs, this book is perfect for you and should be fun as well as challenging.

Too bad it sucks...

My playing, that is. This book is phenomenal. I first heard of Alter Bridge while scrolling through Youtube. Their album Fortress came up and I decided to give it a listen and I was hooked immediately. I fell in love with them. I was floundering in my guitar playing at the time, and I ended up getting this as a Christmas present. I was immediately overwhelmed (but in the good way, you know). I started learning some of the songs and realized they were way harder than anything I'd even attempted to play up until that point (Curse you Mark Tremonti for being so brilliant!). I've been slowly carving away at these songs since Christmas and I couldn't be happier with it. Definitely get it.

Unlike the 1st edition, this edition involves health professionals into the planning process. This is so vital as we have planned environments that impede rather than promote healthy activities like walking/riding bikes to/from work and daily activities, places for public social gatherings, accessible public transportation, parks,, fresh fruits/veggie outlets, etc. Planners DO influence our health. Just What We Need!

As an author myself, I search for references that cover new concepts in a concise, comprehensive, and inviting way. Grossman and Valiga give us just what's needed to motivate nurses to think about the importance of acquiring leadership skills at all levels of nursing. Beautifully designed, well written, and just the right size (Seinfeld would definitely call it "bag-worthy"), this book uses a concise format to cover everything from stewardship to chaos theory in context of a changing health care setting.
I recommend this book for any student or nurse. If you happen to teach nurses, you'll love the critical thinking exercises that guide and challenge new nurses to ponder their own growth as a leader.

Definately not recommending this book

Do not spend money on this. I've never seen anything more crammed with meaningless cites--no quotes, no bullets, nothing to tell you exactly what it was that the reference author was saying. This book violates every law of academia writing and is full of half truths and implied associations with famous, reputable authors. Case in point:

". . . Many creative, motivated, and enthusiastic individuals thrive on chaos and are most successful in their personal and professional lives, despite the incredibly confusing climate in which they function. Hawking (1987) views this uncertainty as opening the way to randomness and unpredictability that are perceived by many as refreshing."

The authors, Sheila Grossman and Theresa Valiga have the unmitigated gal to cite Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time. I sure as heck do not recall reading any such drivel, paraphrased or otherwise, in that book. Grossman and Valiga list A Brief History of Time as published in 1987---it was not published until 1988!

In the opening paragraph of Grossman and Valiga's chapter six, a chapter dedicated to masculine vs feminine management styles (don't get me going on that topic--this book is a turd if ever I've been forced to read one) they carry their perplexing and misleading habit of plastering you with meaningless citations to a new all time low:

Because most nurses are women, understanding gender perspectives in leadership is an essential area of exploration."

This book is a useless turkey that should not find its way into the classroom or boardroom. It buries the few good points it might have other wise made with ten chapters of drivel and the so called annotated is only a partial list of the references, so still no clue what these two are babbling about most of the time. Oh and most of the book's references are as old as I am.

Important read for all nurses

I was required to read this book for a class on Nursing Leadership. It is an excellent book hitting on many relevant topics in nursing leadership. There are chapters on the history and development of nursing leadership as well as ideas and goals for the future. Each chapter is infused with relevant quotes from a wide variety of sources that add to the information being learned at the time. One particular chapter of significance is #6 dealing with Gender Perspective in Leadership, something very important in nursing as more men are coming into a traditionally female profession.

Overall, I think this book should be required reading in all nursing education programs and it is now a staple and reference in my library. For those who wish to increase their leadership potential, this is an absolute must read. I also recommend The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly. Combined these too books have reshaped a lot of my thoughts and ideas about leadership and the correct way to manage people.
