4 Hour Baloney, save your money

Most of the 5-star reviews for 4HB came up on the first day. Given that Tim Ferriss has previously endorsed outsourcing in his Four Hour Workweek, I wonder how many of those 5-star reviews were from his personal assistants abroad.

Let me start with my bona fides: I am a currently practicing and licensed physician in the state of California. I graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine. I am a black belt and a lifelong athlete, and I have been weight training for over 20 years-- and unlike Mr. Ferriss, without injuring myself in any way, ever. I have no financial interest in his book or any other product discussed here.

Regarding the depth of my review of The 4-Hour Body, I spent over [...] on the equipment, supplements, and ultrasound machine recommended in the book. I bought the BodyMetrix Professional ultrasound and software he recommends by Intelametrix ([...] after discount for mentioning 4HB book), and completed the 1-on-1 online training despite the fact I am previously certified in performing ultrasound. I engaged my friends and colleagues in a "Fat off" competition with obsessive and objective weight and body fat measurements and followed the routine for 5 weeks as perfectly as I was able. I also experimented (like Mr. Ferriss) using continuous glucose measurement (CGM) to assess minute-to-minute glucose responses to food and exercise using both the DexCom system he recommends as well as the MiniMed Guardian system. I plan to upload a photo of the nutritional supplements I bought, which nearly cover my kitchen table. I downloaded apps to my phone for recording each workout obsessively, and more importantly to help with the very slow rep time he recommends.

My basic finding is that after trying the diet, supplements, exercise routines and lifestyle changes recommended in the 4-Hour Body that I found no change, whatsoever, in body weight or competition. Nor did any of my other friends trying the book.

Why doesn't the 4HB work?

(1) It takes more than 4 hours a month in the gym to have a great body. I'm sorry, it just does. Mr. Ferriss recommends performing 2-3 SETS, for a total of less than 30 reps, per WEEK, to get a great body. Ask any athlete, bodybuilder, trainer... not enough. Not even close. It's hogwash. I actually could feel my body dwindling despite eating as much protein as I could stomach.

(2) Almost all the supplements recommended in 4HB have never been scientifically proven to do what Mr. Ferriss claims they do. Take cissus quadrangularis (page 110), costs about $30 for 120 capsules. He discusses that he took CQ in China while eating a high volume rice diet with sweets and states "CQ preserved my abs". Really? If that's the level of evidence that you're comfortable with, great. But with simultaneous exercise, multiple other ongoing supplements, lifestyle changes, etc., who can tell whether it was CQ or just dietary changes from his being in rural China?

(3) The diet is just a mishmash of other diet routines, basically Atkins plus paleo with a dash of South Beach Diet. There are important flaws in the diet that should be pointed out. He recommends carbohydrates from beans instead of "white carbohydrates", hence the "slow-carb" diet. This relies on a bunch of old data regarding glycemic index. The reality about carbohydrate digestion is very different. Carbohydrate digestion is so important that it begins IN THE MOUTH with salivary amylase. Whether you eat a slice of Wonder Bread or a handful of garbanzo beans, the breakdown of these sugars into the body's currency of glucose is extremely rapid and effective regardless of which form you ingest it in. I have tried this myself using continuous glucose monitoring as recommended in the book. The only way I have found to blunt the sugar rise is simultaneous ingestion of a good quantity of fat. Also, can a diet really be paleo without milk or dairy? And did early Homo sapiens farm for beans and lentils?

(4) The blood sugar response data in the book is flawed by a misunderstanding of how continuous blood glucose monitoring (CGM) works. He notes "it turned out foods and liquids took much, much longer to get to my bloodstream than one would expect." But the DexCom SEVEN implant he was using has a 20-30 minute delay between the blood sugar reading you get on a finger stick, and the blood sugar reading on the machine sensor. That is, there is a BUILT IN DELAY (check some online diabetic forums for more info on this) because capillary blood from fingersticks shows changes much faster and more accurately than the interstitial fluid surrounding the implant. So, as noted in (3), sugar responses are actually very fast. Drink that protein shake right before or after the workout, not 1 hour prior like he says.

(5) Measuring body fat before and after interventions is much less easy than implied in the book. Body scans using DEXA are really great, but it's hard to convince all your friends to do it with you given inconvenience and expense. I have used the ultrasound unit he recommends and even with training it is very difficult for me to get reliable, repeatable data. This is true even when I have switched it to expert "M" mode and done my own curve fitting of the actual ultrasound output. It is also very dependent on the body type you select for yourself when you calibrate the machine.

(6) The sex improvement section seems out of place in this book, and is not terribly original to boot.

Here's what you can learn from 4HB without buying the book:
---Measure your body fat (!) before and after any change you make in your diet.
---If a book makes unrealistic claims, don't believe it.
---Have your friends join you in challenges and short contests.
---Exercise consistently over years...and be more careful with your body than Mr. Ferriss is.

Pro: It has a lot of great information for people who are new to dieting and exercise.
Easy to read. The split into different chapters you can read without having to read the whole book was a smart choice.
Simple programs.

Con: All the information isn't exactly new or just in this book. For example, the diet is Paleo, which is fine, but not what I expected from the ads. I really hoped for something new here, and what is new sounds dubious at best.
Some of the claims in the books description are a little exaggerated.
The work out is not the best. It's great if you are new to working out, but it's not enough for someone who is already athletic and looking to improve. If you want to be the best athlete you can, this will take you far but it will not get you there.
Reversing permanent injuries can be expensive.

I have a problem with his scientific method. He did a lot of these experiments only on himself, and one after another in a short period of time. His results might be skewed. I'm currently applying a few of his suggestions and have been for 2 weeks. I will update this review in the future if there is any radicle change, but as of now nothing has really happened.

I also do not like that this book has gotten so many perfect reviews so quickly, and that critical reviews are being removed.

All in all, the book is grand if you need to be introduced to the word of nutrition and exercise. But if you have read widely on the subjects already and looking for something different and radically new, this book doesn't really deliver.

Here's what I got out of it

I enjoyed the book. I'm not going to claim that the book is perfect or earth-shattering or anything like that. I did find it entertaining to read all the stuff Tim Ferriss put himself through. I've also benefited from some of his recommendations (though not all). Here's what's in the book so you can make your own decision. I've read all 571 pages and tried most of the strategies (I had my copy for a while because I got my hands on an advanced copy).

Ferriss spent more than a decade researching, monitoring, and noting the progress of his own mind and body. He served as his own laboratory genea pig and also played the role of a doctor, physical therapist, and coach to prepare for this book. Like a school boy, Ferris teaches you how to get your classwork done fast so you can go out and play. He asks you to be skeptical of the book and try only that which you think will help you.

Here's what's in it:

Chapter 1: Fundamentals--First And Foremost

* Ferriss describes the "Mininum Effective Dose" (doing the bare minimum to gain the most desired outcome).

Chapter 2: Ground Zero--Getting Started and Swaraj

* Uses Mahatma Gandhi reference to make the case that only we can govern our body and destiny by what we purposely choose to do.

Chapter 3: Subtracting Fat

Five rules for cutting body fat:
1. Avoid "white" carbohydrates
2. Eat the same few meals over and over again
3. Don't drink calories
4. Don't eat fruit
5. Take one day off per week

* The Lost Art of Bingeing: Specific steps to minimize fat gain while splurging

Chapter 4: Adding Muscle

* Building the Perfect Posterior
* Ferriss turns the table for readers who wish to gain weight by offering strategies on how to gain 34 pounds in 28 days with exercises like the Occam's Protocoli, the Bike-Shed Effect, and GOMAD (Gallon of Milk a Day).

Chapter 5: Improving Sex

* Ferriss tells a story about a promise he made to a female yoga instructor who have never experienced an orgasm in her life that he "would fix her inability to orgasm"

* Eat a large fat-and protein-dominated meal 3 hours before bedtime
* Use low light in the bedroom
* Take a cold bath an hour before bed
* Use a humidifier to generate cool mist
* Try to sleep in the half-military crawl position

How to Sleep Less and Feel Great
* Learn how to manipulate the sleep cycle to stay in REM sleep longer
* Take frequent 20-min naps throughout the day

Chapter 7: Reversing Injuries

* The $10,000 Fix: Ferriss cured his "permanent" injuries by receiving a concoction of chemicals (i.e. Platelet-rich plasma, Stem cell factor, Bone morphogenic proteint-7, Insulin-like growth factor 1) via injection.

The Cheaper Fix in Stages:
* Stage 1: Movement
* Stage 2: Manipulaiton
* Stage 3: Medication
* Stage 4: Surgery

Chapter 8: Running Faster and Farther

* Jumping Higher: Joe DeFranco, a renowned trainer of the NFL Scouting Combine, worked with Ferriss on his shoulder drive, arm position before the jump, squat stance and hip flexors that allowed Ferriss to jump vertically three inches higher in 48 hours.
* Running Faster: Joe DeFranco also coached Ferriss on how to run the 40-yard dash faster by correcting Ferriss's line-and-arm position at the start line. Ferriss was advised to keep his head down, his knee head of his toes, chin tucked and upper body head of lower body, and to take few steps. Ferriss improved his 40-yard dash by .33 seconds in 48 hours.
* Running Further: Ferriss trains by running 400-meter repeatedly (over and over again) while monitoring quantity of repeats, maximum effort percentage, and rest time. Ken Mierke, a world-champion triathlete helped Ferriss with his stride rate, lean position, and arm movement. With preparation, biomechanics, and training, Ferriss was able to increase his running distance of 5K to 50K in 12 weeks.

Chapter 9: Getting Stronger
The gems in this chapter to become stronger as experimented by Ferriss include:
* Dynamic stretching
* Bench press, push-ups, deadlift to knees
* Static Stretching
* Keep "time under tension" while lifting under 10 seconds to avoid muscle burn.
* "Lift heavy but not hard"
* Keep training times (day or night) consistent.

* Ferriss learned how to swim effortlessly within 10 days
* How to swing a bat like Babe Ruth
* How to hold breath longer Houdini, and David Blaine

Chapter 11: On Longer and Better Life
* Take 5-10 grams of Creatine Monohydrate per day
* Fasting and Protein Cycling
* Donate blood

My biggest criticism is the book didn't do enough with the mind part. For that, you might want to read Emotional Intelligence 2.0. That book did a great deal for my mind.

A pioneering milestone about the human condition and where we're going

I was immediately gripped by the opening lines of the first chapter, and for a short while, thought I was holding a work of fiction in my hands. After reminding myself this was the true life tale of two people set upon a quest to understand and decode the mysteries of the human condition via the revealing of DNA manipulation, covert and overt mind control and other manifestations of the eons of separation consciousness and duality. What is even more astonishing is the certainty and vision they hold as regards our capacity to liberate ourselves from the past, via sound and sacred geometry. Humor is also a significant part of the formula for moving beyond survival and into what we were originally designed to be. Highly recommended. Warning to the uninitiated - this book will rock your pictures of reality!

I'm still in the midst of reading this amazing book. Ms. Carter is a brilliant and evocative writer and transmitter of this multidimensional information. It's so personal and at the same time so expansive, elevating and inspirational. Hope is in the Air. I heartily recommend this revolutionary book to all who are ready, and/or are seeking, to co-create the "New Template."

speechless, transformed, mesmerized, enchanted, honoured

It was only a month ago that I read this masterpiece. "read" is an understatement if you will because I didn't just "read" it. I devoured it, while digesting, pondering, experiencing every single morsel of this most amazing richly complex, powerful, enchanting, mesmerizing feast. I ate it, slept it, thought it, dreamed it, felt it, talked about it. I quoted from it so much that so many of my friends became interested in it, and all of this for $10, instantly downloadable? I mean are you kidding me? Given the magnitude of the systemic evolution this book caused in my life, given the huge implications it had on my my idea of what I am here to do on this planet, had I known what it would do for me I would easily have paid 100 times more for it. Yes! thats right $1000 for this work of pure light, genius, magic, inspiration, higher science showing me what we really are! wow. This book wasn't a deal it was a steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal! I felt like a parched man who didn't just find a glass of water, but a well spring of Divine nectar, the Source of all amrita. Part II examines the mathematical basis of Frege's logicism, explaining and exploring Frege's formal arguments. Heck argues that Frege himself knew that his proofs could be reconstructed so as to avoid Russell's Paradox, and presents Frege's arguments in a way that makes them available to a wide audience. He shows, by example, that careful attention to the structure of Frege's arguments, to what he proved, to how he proved it, and even to what he tried to prove but could not, has much to teach us about Frege's philosophy.

About the Author

Richard G. Heck, Jr., Brown University

Richard G. Heck, Jr., is Romeo Elton Professor of Natural Theology at Brown University, where he has taught since 2005. He taught at Harvard University from 1991 through 2005 and was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he received his PhD in 1991; at New College, Oxford (BPhil, 1987), where he was a Marshall Scholar; and at Duke University (BS, 1985). Professor Heck has worked on the philosophies of language, logic, mathematics, and mind, and is is one of the world's foremost experts on the philosophy of Gottlob Frege. He lives in Canton, Massachusetts, with his wife, daughter, and five cats.

Magisterial

I’ve been eagerly (though sporadically) reading this work, so far up to chapter 9. The publication of the translation of the _Grundgesetze_ itself has sidetracked me temporarily, but Amazon’s robots have been nagging me to review this on the grounds that no-one else has done so. So I’ll note the obvious, that this is a magisterial work of enormous benefit to anyone who is, or will be, reading one of the greatest achievements of the human intellect, and I’m outraged at the academic(s) who delayed it by telling Professor Heck that he wouldn’t get tenure if he worked on Frege. [footnote three of preface]

����Much as I’m enjoying it, I do have a few presentational quibbles. The general comment is that I would have appreciated more foreshadowing; sometimes when the author makes a comment about the point to a proof I’ve just struggled through, I would have liked to know the point before the struggle, e.g., at the end of �6.7, and the top of p. 222. Slightly more substantively (but only slightly), the elucidation of (56) on p. 147 is in a slightly different order from the formula elucidated, transposing two conjuncts in the middle line. I’d also suggest the following index entries:

Not quite as good as the first one.

This is a great book, but not quite as good as the first: Visual Aid: Stuff You've Forgotten, Things You Never Thought You Knew, and Lessons You Didn't Quite Get Around to Learning

If you don't already own the original, I would suggest it over the sequel. While Visual Aid 2 is certainly enjoyable, it feels somehow more forced than it's predecessor.

Disappointing.

Totally disappointing. The first book, Visual Aid 1 is fantastic. Clever, well laid out, fun. This, the second of the visual aid series is jammed, over worded, and awkward. It feels as if the publisher hired a great designer for the first book, and decided to wing it themselves for the second. Skip this book, but don't miss the original!

I greatly enjoyed this book. Not too in depth about the history of advertising the author provides background as to the sea change moments over 100 years of industry. Also reads fast and well paced.

Very impressive history of an interesting side effect of our information age

We often refer to our civilization as the information age. Maybe a slightly more descriptive metaphor would be our advertising sponsored “free” information age. Tim Wu does an outstanding job of mapping out the history leading to this “free” information age. He starts a long time ago when Benjamin Day started a newspaper in New York City in the 1830s based on a revolutionary model at the time of being funded primarily by print advertising. Unlike his competitors, he sold his daily at a big loss. But, he more than made up for it by advertising. He started the business by creating unsolicited ads in his newspaper to trigger the interest of the merchants he had advertised on their behalf without their asking. Tim Wu goes on meticulously on detailing a succession of pioneers that will essentially leverage derivatives of this pioneering advertising sponsored business model onto radio, TV, internet, and ultimately mobile. By the end the advertising merchants have created trading networks that make hedge fund nanotraders seem like boy scouts on bicycles. Indeed, such advertising networks make so many near instant decisions to route whatever the most relevant ad is delivered to the highest commercial bidder on monitor and screens of all sizes.

At almost any time there is a tension or trade-off between getting wonderful information services for much below cost or entirely free and essentially suffering from advertising pollution that impairs our brain’s focus to achieve what we were meant to do on this earth.

Tim Wu feels the above issue has reached a boiling point. He is not alone. Even technology industry leaders have taken that position. In one of the last chapters, he focuses on Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, who championed this position. He indicated that the advertising invasion is really impairing customer experiences including underperformance (in terms of speed, video-streaming quality, etc.) of all related information appliances when surfing the internet. Along those lines Tim Cook delivered ad-blockers that are readily available on all Apple’s devices.

Tim Cook’s position is both laudable and self-serving (and not necessarily in a bad way, but a smart way). When you think of the four major behemoths of the technology field: Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple; they increasingly overlap and compete with each other over various domains be it cell phones, cloud servers, operating systems, and numerous other software platforms. But, when you look at the funding sources the first two (Google and Facebook) are essentially dominant advertising agencies. Meanwhile, Amazon is the major retail clearinghouse middleman who also benefits a great deal from advertising. On the other hand, Apple is from a funding source standpoint in a silo earning a buck the old fashion way by selling mainly hardware (I Phones, I Pads, I Watch) and services (music, apps). It does not make money from advertising. So, for Tim Cook to lead and facilitate the campaign of the ad-blockers is a direct arrow at the advertising based business of his main competitors.

In the last chapter, Tim Wu goes on that we should regain our consciousness and our focus. We should think more deliberately about the choice we make. Do we want to keep on selling ourselves for “free” to be part of massive audiences that are very lucratively marketable by the Big 3 (Facebook, Google, Amazon)? I have recently experienced what it is like. I just recently got a mini I Pad, a really cool little machine. And, I remember attempting to read a serious article that demanded focus in order to be understood. The mini I Pad screen is plenty big for reading. However, it seems that nearly three fourth of the screen was wasted on ads in various forms. And, I literally could not practice the type of slow attentive reading I needed to understand the article. I quickly gave up and read the article a few days later on a printed copy with no problem and a lot more enjoyment and retention. So, I should consider the ad-blocker apps as many of you have already. And, Tim Wu’s nearly spiritual call at the end does promote such attitude. Let’s reclaim the independence of our brain. Let’s focus. Let’s maximize the outcome of our respective destinies.

Tim Wu’s position is really attractive and nearly unquestionable. Could one really take the opposite position? Let’s waste our time being distracted by an unending stream of advertisement and related vapid entertainment and distraction and don’t leave a legacy whatsoever of our passage on earth. Ok, that’s not a very good rebuttal of Tim Wu’s position.

However, if we look at the underlying economics the underlying argument may get more complicated. Let’s say the Big 3 entirely loose out their ad revenues. And, they do not make enough from selling various apps and games to cover their costs. They actually would have to charge for their “free services.” They could use different models such as monthly subscriptions or paying for each unit of services. Given that, how much would you be willing to pay monthly to maintain access to your Facebook profile and its related networking activities? How much would you be willing to pay for one single Google search? Similarly, how much would Facebook and Google have to charge to effectively cover their lost advertising revenues? Those questions become a chicken and the egg issue because the price affects the demand. For “free” those services have nearly infinite demand. But, for any realistic price the demand for all those “free” services would crater. Such economic questions most often render problems or issues much more complicated than otherwise. This economic conundrum was not Tim Wu’s objective when writing “The Attention Merchants.” And, that is perfectly fine. His book probably packs in a more effective punch by focusing on the tension between “The Attention Merchants” and the self-actualization of our own focused consciousness.
