great introduction to theology of Matthew, lay-accessible but still theologically rich

Introduction
I believe passionately that the church needs the academy; that lay Christians without Bible college or seminary education also need to think deeply about their faith, digging deeper into the meaning of biblical texts rather than jumping immediately into what it means "to them," reading theological books rather than just books on "Christian living." But good/appropriate resources can be hard to find; sometimes when you look for books that aren't fluff, what you find are overly technical books that are great for the nerds and academics, but difficult and dry for the rest.

The Explorations in Biblical Theology series from P&R seeks to fill this gap, offering believers substantial biblical and theological content at a popular-level of readability and accessibility. The series (which I believe is not yet complete) includes two types of books, those that treat a biblical theme (e.g. the Holy Spirit, justification) and those that treat the theology of a book of the Bible. Each book seeks to be Reformed in orientation and treats its topic (whether theme of biblical book) from the perspective of biblical theology."Explorations in Biblical Theology is committed to being warm and winsome, with a focus to applying God's truth to life" (x).

Overview
Intentionally titled "A Theology of Matthew" rather than "A Theology of the Gospel of Matthew," this book seeks to explore the theology of the apostle Matthew. Part 1 sets this up by briefly tackling issues of authorship, date, location, audience, and intended structure in chapter 1. Quarles states the purpose of the gospel of Matthew as follows:

"From the first line of Matthew's gospel, it is apparent that Matthew intends to focus his gospel on Jesus Christ. The description of Jesus as the Son of David and Son of Abraham indicates that Matthew intends to explain multiple facets of Jesus' identity. Thus, Matthew's gospel is Christocentric, and any responsible treatment of the theology of his gospel must emphasize Matthew's Christology...Matthew's primary concern is to reveal Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham, Son of God, and Immanuel, to his readers...Matthew has other concerns...but these are subordinate to his focus on Jesus" (16).

Thus, this book focuses largely on Matthew's Christology rather than his broader theology; however, other theological themes that are so tightly integrated as to be inseparable are treated in an integrative approach.

Chapter 2 is an introduction to the theological study of Matthew. The Christology of Matthew can't be approached with a simple survey of titles of Jesus; it takes a mining of the depths of the entirety of the gospel that is a work of a lifetime. However, Quarles provides several simple steps:

1. Discovering the central message (via the grammatical statement of the book, which most scholars agree to as Matthew 1:21)
2. Understanding first-century Judaism (modern readers often fail to understand this gospel as Matthew's original readers would have due to lack of familiarity with the Old Testament and Second Temple Literature.
3. Vertical reading of the gospel (reading from start to finish, preferably in a single sitting)
4. Horizontal reading of the gospel (reading the gospel of Matthew in a harmony that places the three synoptic gospels in parallel columns)

The rest of the book is divided into four parts, looking at Jesus as the new Moses (deliverer), the new David (king), the new Abraham (founder of a new chosen people), and the new Creator (God and author of new creation). Each part looks first at Matthew's development of the theme, then the theological significance of the theme.

Conclusion
This book is a great introduction to the theology of Matthew (written from the perspective of biblical theology). It is accessible to laypeople, as it is largely free from biblical languages and technical jargon. Yet it is still rich and deep in biblical and theological development, with ample footnotes for those who desire further study. This book not only enriches your understanding of the gospel of Matthew (especially its Christology), but it also enriches your understanding of the Old Testament as Quarles shows how countless Old Testament Scriptures are fulfilled in Christ. This book also draws us to worship.

A Theology of Matthew is a book for Christians anywhere on the spectrum - from laypeople interested in a deeper study of Matthew to Bible students and seminarians to pastors. For those who enjoy studying with Bible commentaries, I think this book is a great supplement to commentaries since commentaries don't draw out theological themes in this way.

An excellent study of the theme in Matthew that Christ was fulfilling the Old Testament. Quarles digs into the original languages and texts to open up many treasures in Matthew that provide a multifaceted view of who Jesus was. He includes a detailed defense of the divinity of Christ as presented by Matthew, in contradiction to some recent liberal claims to the contrary. Written from a theologically conservative point of view (inerrantist, Baptist, amillennial).

Read this book!

The following is a quote from this book that really hit home with me and puts into words something I have been thinking about for quite a while. I want to share it as part of my review.

“The modern church suffers from a tragic case of doctrinal anemia. The church has become weakened and sickened by a lack of clear and firm doctrinal convictions. For over a decade, many Christian leaders have sounded the alarm regarding the problem of Biblical illiteracy in contemporary Christianity. Although Biblical illiteracy is a serious concern, and the church must take steps to address it, doctrinal anemia is a far more frightening malady. Doctrinal anemia involves ignorance of fundamental truths of the Christian faith that are essential to the salvation of individuals or necessary for the spiritual health of God’s people.”

The author’s passion that all people come to understand these fundamental truths is evident throughout the book. He believes that a thorough understanding of Matthew will provide those essential truths.

“The Theology of Matthew” gave me a new insight as to the way Jews would have read the book of Matthew. It was an amazing experience. I will never read Matthew the same way again. I want to read, no I want to really study this book in depth when I have more time. I want to sit down and go verse by verse and spend lots of time going over everything the author shares in the book. He takes the reader through Matthew’s presentation of Jesus and shows what each element of the book of Matthew really says to anyone who has a thorough knowledge of the Old Testament. He shines a light on pathways that I didn’t realize were there.

The only issue I have with the book is the author’s belief that the Church today is the new Israel. He gives his evidence for that view, but I was not dissuaded from my literal belief that God will fulfill His promise to the Jewish race and the nation of Israel. However, our disagreement does not take away from the value of his book.

I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the fundamental truths of Christianity and the book of Matthew.

Thorough and almost identical to previous edition.

Thorough. Covers just about all contingencies of diagnoses. I have an older edition. They are almost identical. Boy do I hate it when I'm required to buy the recent edition of a text I already own. The publishers really take advantage of students who least can afford to shell out the $$.

Easy to read, great diagnostic view

In my ADN program the teachers compiled their own mini binder books to supply to the class. This would have been a great supplemental book for any level of nursing program (and I have been through them all- LPN, RN, RN-BSN, and now nurse practitioner grad school. I like the larger print, smaller book size, and great diagnostics. However, there are also many great apps that one could buy as a practicing nurse that contain up to date information, so this is worth the money if you do not want to spend a great deal of money every year on an app. Or if your like me, this book would be a great one to keep for your nursing school library.

Five stars are not enough. This is an absolutely superb introduction to Wittgenstein's thought, its background, its development, and its later influence. Schroeder does a wonderful job explaining both the 'Tractatus' and the later 'Philosophical Investigations', and the relationship between the two.

On a certain representationalist ("picture theory") view of language, Wittgenstein thought that the analytic perspective known as logical atomism had to be correct on logical grounds, and that all the problems of philosophy capable of being sensibly talked about were thereby solved, at least in principle. The logical form of a sensible assertion about the facts of the world must mirror the logical form of the facts it describes. Bertrand Russell's work had created an audience primed to accept such a doctrine, and analytical philosophy was off and running. The logical positivists, for example, quickly picked it up to use as a sword to slay all metaphysics and to put ethical and aesthetic assertions in their proper place -- somewhere outside of philosophy properly construed. Ayer's 'Language, Truth, and Logic' presented this approach to a wide audience. The 'Tractatus' itself was not easy to understand, and Wittgenstein protested that he was being misinterpreted in important ways. But he had revolutionized philosophy nevertheless.

But Wittgenstein, meanwhile, was having second thoughts about the representationalist view of language that was foundational to his 'Tractatus'. In actual use, language gets used in myriad ways other than to describe a factual situation, ways that often have a slippery quality that is not amenable to logical analysis. Philosophical analysis cannot create a level of precision that does not exist in the actual use of the language. If a concept describes no more than a "family resemblance" among the particulars it is used to refer to, then no amount of analysis can render it sharp. A sharpened concept would be a new and artificial one, a construction of the philosopher and no longer the one being used by real speakers. Wittgenstein argued that language that is not disciplined by some contact with the world is free to spin its wheels and end up in all kinds of nonsense. Thus, a speaker cannot usefully provide meaning to his utterances by some private mental imagery that accompanies them; meaningful communication requires that the meaning of words is a matter of their socially established, conventional uses; we know what words mean when we know how they are used in our linguistic community. It was considerations like these, and many more, that led Wittgenstein to the views that were eventually published as 'Philosophical Investigations', and to leave behind the pinched version of language found in the 'Tractatus'. In effect, he launched a revolution against his own, earlier, revolution.

I cannot recommend Schroeder's book highly enough. Its organization is just right, it covers all the major issues, and the writing is extremely good. There is plenty of historical context and biographical detail. Schroeder knows his subject inside and out, including the secondary literature and commentary that has grown up around Wittgenstein's work. Systematic, crystal clear, and comprehensive -- what more could you want? I would love to take this author's course on Wittgenstein, because he must be a superlative teacher. Highest possible recommendation.

BABYLON IS A BLOCKBUSTER

From the first page to the last, the author, Gerald Posner delivers an exciting expose of the seedy underside of the Politics, Powers and Prerogatives of the players that control Miami and Miami Beach. The author exposes the esoteric secrets that transformed this community into a modern day Babylon. Nothing is held back, from the filthy political back door deals to the chilling coke controlled economy that built these cities and are still building them.

Miami Babylon begins with the beguiling first chapter entitled "Gasoline on a Fire." Posner entices the reader with the historical narrative, revealing the horrendous ordeal of the "Mariel Boatlift" and the everlasting effect it had on the predominately elderly, predominately Jewish, totally defenseless population it destroyed. The reader is enticed by the first hand experiences and riveting revelations as they ride along with Miami Beach Homicide Detective Charlie Seraydar on the midnight shift as he routinely risks his life in trying to save South Beach. Charlie hauntingly reveals, "The first year of Mariel was like a war zone" with the crime rate rising over 600 percent and the elderly being murdered at the highest rate in the history of the city."

Miami Babylon is compulsively readable and wonderfully written.

Newspaper-ish

Posner's book is in essence a dissertation based on a careful review of the Miami Herald's archives. The strength of this book is its parallel between the speculative boom and bust of the 1920s and the 2000s. Jorge Perez commenting on Carl Fisher? Delicious.

Its weakness is the unbalanced chronology. Halfway through the book, you've gone through Miami Beach's 20th century history. The other half focuses - way too closely, on the Beach's recent history. The lack of balance can discourage a reader, and gives the impression that Posner had the benefit of online search engines to research the Beach's recent past.

There is gossip, several interesting behind-the-scenes vignettes, and a mighty struggle to pull together the thematic parallels between Fisher and Perez. On the latter, Posner succeeds, but just barely so.

Miami Babylon Versus Fools Paradise

While everyone is entitled to their opinions I couldn't help but noticing that early reviewers seemed to include a number of people related to the book. For example I assume the poster "Alex Daoud" is the Alex Daoud who was Mayor of Miami Beach.

That being said I think this is a well written and comprehensive overview of Miami Beach and my (independent) appraisal would be four stars. The author, Gerald Posner has written numerous books and the writing, chronological organization of the material and footnoting are all quite professional.

The book begins with early development of the Miami era, the land boom during the 1920s, the decline through the 1930s and 1940s, the growth of Miami Beach after World War Two, the influx of elderly retirees, the devastating impact of the Mariel Boatlift from Cuba,the physical decline of the city, its rediscovery by early gentrification pioneers, the evolution of South Beach culture, "Miami Vice" and the cocaine cowboys, the South Beach nightlife, the zoning battles between the older residents and developers, the condo boom etc.

The author, who apparently started interviews for the book in 2005, was somewhat beaten to the punch by another established author, Steven Gaines, who published Fools Paradise less than a year before this book. Both cover the same topic and time line; consequently there is a lot of overlap. Fools Paradise tends to go into more detail on the nightlife aspect of South Beach (i.e. modeling, the clubs, the promoters). I don't know if Gerald Posner re-focused Miami Babylon after publication of the earlier book. However Miami Babylon has a greater emphasis on the real estate redevelopment and zoning aspects. I note that one reviewer gave only one star on the basis that it covered "boring" real estate deals of no interest to that reader. I think that is unfair relative to the total scope of the book but it is undeniable that real estate aspects have a heavy weighting.

I can recommend both books to readers interested in the subject of Miami Beach/South Beach. If choosing only one to read I would be guided by your interest in nightlife versus re-development.

About the Author
Dan Lattimore, Ph.D. is Vice Provost for Extended Programs and Dean of University College at the University of Memphis. He is also professor of Journalism. His undergraduate degree in journalism and economics is from Texas Christian University. He holds masters degrees from TCU in economics and Southwestern Baptist Seminary in education administration and his doctorate in mass communication is from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of five books including Public Relations: The Profession and Practice, 5th Edition, published by McGraw Hill, and The Broadcast News Process 7th Edition, published by Morton Publishing Co. He is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and is past chair (twice) of the Education Affairs Committee for PRSA. He is a past president of the PRSA Educators Academy and past president of the Memphis Chapter of Public Relations Society of America. Dr. Lattimore was vice president of the Accrediting Council for Journalism and Mass Communication for 6 years and rotated off the Council after 12 years on the Council last May. He is a member of the Commission for Public Relations Education. Among his professional work was 10 years as communication director for several USAID projects throughout the world where he produced numerous films and videos. He was acting director for a $20 million USAID project with Colorado State University, Utah State University and Cornell University for one year and associate director for the Colorado State project for three years. He was also communications director for the Minnesota-Wisconsin Baptist Fellowship for two years. He is the chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Regents Online Degree Programs for the Tennessee Board of Regents. He also developed the first online masters program in journalism in the country in 1995.

Public relation is more than damage control..

Starting with the nature, history, and a theoretical basis of public relations, the book covers law ethics, research, strategic planning, action communication, evaluating effectiveness, media and community, consumer marketing, investor relations, corporate, government and nonprofit sector, and crisis management.

The book has 17 mini cases, and is concise with less than 400 pages. It was used as a college textbook. Nowadays, the Business School offers this course just like the School of Journalism. The difference is the Business School addresses Public Relations from the company standpoint. It is a practical approach.

This book will be better if in-depth case studies are included. Then I can use it for the MBA level in the Business School.

Boring typical academic book

I bought this book for an online PR 1 class in Spring 2009. I felt like I wasn't learning anything so I dropped the class and the following semester took it in an actual class with a different teacher and different book and it was mush better, to the point where I now want to have a career in PR because of the new book and professor. I thought PR was such a boring topic with this book but the other PR book (author Fraser Seitel) in the new class was so much more interesting. I am gonna sell this book back on Amazon!!

Serves its purpose

This textbook serves the purpose of giving BASIC knowledge and practice about the Public Relations field. The practice situations and examples provided give the beginning PR student a broad knowledge of what is going on in the field. The organization of the book was probably the best trait it had, as it is organized in TYPES of PR (sports, non-profit, disaster, etc) and gave examples of what to do in the situations provided.

Overall, it is a good book for a good price. Every PR student should pick this one up!

Introduction: Dreams!

Is there anyone reading this who hasn't had them? Do you remember the very first dream you ever had? I don't! But I do remember dreaming as a very young child. Much like Chuang Tze, early on I became aware of the fact that there was a part of me that apparently lived not in one, but in two worlds. Still later on I came to understand that not only could I move between one and the other, but that I could actually live between the two, as well.

In time I came to realize that existing in such a state was not a blessing at all, but rather a kind of curse that accompanied special people, whom Colin Wilson would one day write about, calling them "outsiders."

And with this understanding also came the realization that if I had a religion at all, it was not the Methodism of my youth, but rather that I was a "mystic," the roots of which word originally meant "to be silent," no doubt referring to the inability of man to put into words his experience of the ineffable.

You see, it is not as the ancient Hebrews would have us believe, that it is a blasphemy to utter the name of Yahweh. But rather, that to do so is an impossibility...for the moment one speaks the name of God, he is no longer that which is being spoken of. Hence, the Taoists would write, "The Tao which can be spoken of is not the real Tao!" It is this very idea that led the mystic Joel S. Goldsmith to coin the phrase "The Infinite Invisible" to describe that deity which he perceived.

So you see, it is only in the dream state that we as mortals ever begin to come close to even the remotest comprehension of who and what our gods may very well be. This truth was well known in ancient times and led to the creation of "sleep temples," which allowed those judged ill to regain their health through divine intervention. It was taught that during sleep, the god comes to you, bringing his or her healing touch. Of all the gods and their temples thought of in this way, the sanctuary of Asklepios was held in the highest reverence, becoming the very apex of Greek healing practice.

But it was not until I met Erlo van Waveren, one of Carl G. Jung's direct disciples, that I truly came to understand how very important dreams were. As the analysand of van Waveren, I grew to appreciate and rely on the unfiltered wisdom that I could obtain from my dreams, if I could but perceive the meaning behind the various symbols, which would present themselves night after night. And it is here that the present work becomes important.

Over half a century ago, Bruce King, who founded Zolar Publishing, gathered together whatever ancient dream books could be found and created what would unknowingly become an indisputable classic in occult literature. Such quickly took its place by the bedsides of rich and poor worldwide.

And in fact, of all the Zolar books in print, it is the Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams that is most often treasured and passed down from parents to children, much like a family heirloom.

In this present edition, I have, with the help of the skillful editing talents of Nadine Daily Papon, removed ambiguities and duplications found in the first edition and have alphabetized the meanings within dream descriptions to make them more quickly accessible. And to make them even more useful, we have added lucky numbers for each dream category.

And, of course, should any of these numbers prove "prophetable," I will not be offended by the receipt of any cashier's checks that readers may wish to tender with their "thank you" notes!

WORST DREAM BOOK EVER-- GARBAGE!!!

Zolar's Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams: Fully Revised and Updated for the 21st CenturyThis is the most poorly written and amateurish dream book I have ever read!!!, the dream meanings are so predictable and filled with nonsense, that anyone with any knowledge of the subject would think that it was written by a child,it's easy to see why in the introduction, the author states "...have as much fun with this book as I have had in presenting it to you",the author has taken a book that most people would look to for some serious insight to what their dreams really meant, and turned it into a book of complete nonsense!!!
