About the Author
Nick Collins is a lecturer at the University of Sussex. A composer, performer and researcher in the field of computer music, his research interests include machine listening, interactive and generative music, and computational musicology. He co-edited The Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music (2007) and The SuperCollider Book (2011) and wrote the Introduction to Computer Music (2009). Margaret Schedel is an Assistant Professor of Music at Stony Brook University. A composer and cellist specialising in the creation and performance of 'ferociously interactive media', she sits on the boards of 60x6, the BEAM Foundation, the ICMA, and Organised Sound. She has edited issues of the Journal of Visual Culture on Sound Art and Organised Sound on Visual Music. In 2009 she won the first Ruth Anderson Prize for her interactive installation Twenty Love Songs and a Song of Despair. Her research focuses on gesture in music, and the sustainability of technology in art. She serves as Co-Director of Computer Music and is a core faculty member of cDACT, the consortium for digital art, culture and technology.

Scott Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in Composition and Live Electroacoustic Music at the University of Birmingham. Primarily a composer, his works have been presented internationally, and include compositions for both instrumental and electroacoustic forces, as well as multimedia pieces. He has been active in the development of software for use with Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre, the Music Department's loudspeaker orchestra, and in developing new approaches for large-scale multichannel electroacoustic composition. He is also involved in the development of the SuperCollider computer music language and was co-editor of The SuperCollider Book, with Nick Collins and David Cottle.

About the Author
Samuel Miller was born in Dover, Delaware on October 31, 1769. His father was the Rev. John Miller (1722-1791). Miller attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1789. He earned his license to preach in 1791, and the university awarded him a Doctorate of Divinity degree (D.D.) in 1804. From 1813 to 1849, he served as Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government at Princeton Theological Seminary, and was also integral in founding the institution. Throughout his career, Miller participated in many of the controversies that took place within the Presbyterian Church, including that which resulted in its division into New and Old Schools. He also published several theological and polemical works, including Letters on Unitarianism (1821), Infant Baptism: Scriptural and Reasonable (1835), and Thoughts on Public Prayer (1849). Miller died in Princeton, New Jersey on January 7, 1850.

About the Author
Karma Yeshe Rabgye is a Western Monk in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally from England, he now lives in Ashoka Buddhist Temple, Northern India, where he teaches Buddhism and meditation classes to people of all ages. Yeshe spent several years in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas teaching young monks basic Buddhist philosophy and meditation. He now offers teachings freely to all in a manner that is unpretentious and clear. He does not demand students to blindly accept what he says, but instead invites them to examine their own minds and experiences to discover the validity of Gautama Buddha’s teachings. Yeshe quietly demonstrates Gautama Buddha’s teaching on compassion through the charitable trust ‘Sangye Menla’ that he founded in 2008 in Chandigarh, Northern India. The trust provides medical assistance and care to people from the Himalayan region in India.

The Best Way To Catch A Snake

Lama Karma Yeshe Rabgye presents the ancient teachings of Buddhist traditions and wisdom in a simple and straight forward way. He manages to convey to the reader the most fundamental teachings of Buddhism throughout the book and he shares very easy methods to help the reader learn the importance of being responsible for his/her own thoughts and actions and through such mindfulness training, the reader comes to discover the kindness, compassion and peace that is inherent in all of us.

One does not need to be a Buddhist to benefit from reading this book. It is a source of inspiration and is truly a handbook for living consciously in our modern world.

Clear and concise --- a contemporary introduction to the Buddha's teachings

As a student and practitioner of Buddhism, I welcome Venerable Karma Yeshe Rabgye's clear and concise introduction to the central teachings of the Buddha.

His text covers the Four Seals, the Four Noble Truths, and the Four Preliminary Thoughts and includes appendices on the various schools of Buddhism and a short biography of the life of the Buddha.

Overall,Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye presents the subject matter in a way that allows a contemporary reader to relate the teachings to his/her life. At various points, the text invites the reader to think about different aspects of the material by posing questions that are intended for further reflection. Furthermore, Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye draws on a broad variety of scriptures that belong to various traditions of Buddhism to illustrate and support the claims he makes. Though he clearly identifies his own perspective (the Karma Kagyu tradition), he embraces the wisdom that is found in the writings of other schools of Buddhism as well. Contemporary references and a sense of humor make "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" pleasant to read and easy to follow.

The only suggestion I have is that, in the next edition, the list of sources that appear in the bibliography section be expanded to include all of the texts that are mentioned in the book. Doing so will allow the reader to follow up on the various canonical writings much more easily.

In summary, "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" is a clear and concise introduction to the principles of Buddhism that is intended for a general reader. I would certainly consider including it in an introductory course on Buddhism that is taught at the college or university level.

Crystal Clear!

What I loved about The Best Way To Catch A Snake is that it stripped back the ritualistic layers of Buddhism and presented its essential insights, of which almost anybody can see the obvious merit. This is not just for the sake of clarity; it is also in response to the lama's accurate observation that many Westerners are confused about what it really means to be a Buddhist. This is something Karma Yeshe Rabgye has special insight into since he was originally from the U.K. before studying in Tibet and India, where he now practices.

A classic book, but it's time for the updated edition

I got this book as reference material for Environmental PE exam. It's a classic on air pollution and it has helpful supplemental content on the air pollution subject areas discussed in the PE Reference Manual. However, this is an older edition, although the theory is still good, the discussion on industrial waste gas treatment and sampling methods are pretty out-dated. And there were quite a few questions on those in the PE exam. So, an updated edition of the book would have been even better.

Very short serial but entertaining

Super fast and short alien kidnapping story. Unlike most of these abduction stories, Evie is aware of what's going on rather than being snatched in her sleep or off the street. This is a fated mates type story rather than the aliens-have-no-women-and-must-steal-breeders kind of deal. There was no time to develop the characters or do any real world building and most of the story was taken up with sex scenes. I liked the brief picture of the Fremm and would like to get more of their culture and world--hopefully that's in the next book. While there's not a cliffhanger per se this is an obvious serial with an abrupt ending and much more story to come. I read this through KU so I plan to follow up with the sequel. Be aware that the title work reflects only part of the the page count; another short story and a number of pages listing the author's other works and giving contact info for the mailing list, etc. takes up quite a bit of space.

Too short

I think there were too many errors and inconsistencies in this book to really be enjoyed. I know that it is a novella, but there wasn't enough back story to have the readers understand. Also, there was just too much going on and I felt there was a great lack of chemistry. Believable chemistry. It was too much like a caveman story where man sees woman, likes woman, and then kidnaps her. I needed more.

I love a good destined mate story

I love a good destined mate story. There is something about finding the one and only person you are meant to be with. Aster, who never believed in mates himself, must convince Evie they are meant to be together. There is an instant attraction, on his side at least, which has Aster behaving foolishly.

Evie spies Aster while working and is attracted to this big blue alien. When he asks to spend time with her, how could she say no? She doesn’t believe in this mate business he keeps going on about. She is surprised when she finds out he’s a Prince. Can things get much more complicated?

Misunderstandings get in the way and must be smoothed over if there is any chance for Evie to be his. You could stop with the ending in this one, but it just wet my appetite for the rest of Aster and Evie’s story. So onto book two!

Interesting look into the Roman world

I had to buy this book for my Roman Achievement class and I thoroughly enjoyed it- both the book AND the class! Much of what know of the lives of Romans was found by studying the many examples of how they wanted to be remembered- and that is primarily what this book offers. I like that it gives both English and Latin translations of tombstone inscriptions and that it is categorized by different social classes. This gave me a lot of insight into the differences between the lives of the aristocracy versus regular Roman families, slaves, freedman, or persons of the military. If you enjoy learning about the Roman era this book is a must have!

Great intro to Latin epigraphy

This book is good because it not only provides translations of a variety of interesting Latin inscriptions, it also teaches you a lot about the fascinating field of Latin epigraphy. It achieves this not merely by means of some nice introductory essays, but by printing, not simply a translation of each inscription, but also a relatively unedited Latin text followed by a more edited version of the Latin in which all the many abbreviations have been expanded into their full-word equivalents. This enables the reader to compare the translation with the text and learn those ubiquitous Latin abbreviations of which the Romans were so fond.

When Alvord, who is half Navajo, dissected her first cadaver, she broke an important rule in her culture: "Navajos do not touch the dead. Ever." In the process of becoming a "white man's doctor," Alvord discovered that among the indigenous customs her medical training forced her to ignore were valuable healing practices that are sorely needed in allopathic medicine. In this inspiring memoir, Alvord, assisted by Van Pelt, describes her endeavors to integrate a Navaho approach to healing with high-tech medical procedures. She left the pueblo at age 16 to attend Dartmouth on scholarship, survived the numbing vicissitudes of surgical training at Stanford and returned home jubilantly to work as a general surgeon at the local medical center, only to discover that her demeanor and her state-of-the-art skills frightened her patients. When she returned to New Mexico to practice medicine at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, she soon realized that her patients were frightened of her manner and technical ability and that she needed to merge her state-of-the-art skills with her traditional culture. Her father had an alcohol problem, and despite being retiring, her mother taught her much about her heritage and how to be a warm and understanding person. With journalist Van Pelt's help, Alvord tells her life story and describes the culture of her people, setting both in the striking, seemingly limitless landscape of the Southwest. As far as Alvord knows, she is the first Navajo woman to become a surgeon; those who follow her on such a path have an excellent model. From her early education, she made the first major jump to become an undergraduate at Dartmouth, the antithesis, in many respects, to her previous life. Gifted with resilience and a sense of humor, she was also fortunate in having understanding, no-nonsense mentors. Medical school at Stanford, another major leap, was followed by her return to Gallup, New Mexico, for years of successful surgery. Combining and yet keeping distinct her Navajo medical ways and Western medicine is a major theme in Alvord's absorbing autobiography. William Beatty
