About the Author
Tracy Fullerton, M.F.A., is a game designer, educator and writer with fifteen years of professional experience. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Interactive Media Division of the USC School of Cinema-Television where she serves as Co-Director of the Electronic Arts Game Innovation Lab. Recent credits include faculty advisor for the award-winning student game Cloud, and game designer for The Night Journey a unique game/art project with media artist Bill Viola. Prior to joining the USC faculty, she was president and founder of the interactive television game developer, Spiderdance, Inc. Spiderdance's games included NBC's Weakest Link, MTV's webRIOT, The WB's No Boundaries, History Channel's History IQ, Sony Game Show Network's Inquizition and TBS's Cyber Bond. Before starting Spiderdance, Tracy was a founding member of the New York design firm R/GA Interactive. As a producer and creative director she created games and interactive products for clients including Sony, Intel, Microsoft, AdAge, Ticketmaster, Compaq, and Warner Bros. among many others.

An absolute must-have for aspiring game designers

The top rating is well-deserved -- this book is both thorough and well-written. Fullerton provides in-depth discussion and a progressive approach to introducing the material. It begins with the absolute basics, discussing the basics of where game ideas come from, and ends with a treatise on the inner-workings of the game publishing industry.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about game development, as a trade, and especially for anyone looking to do it as a profession.

There were so many things to love about this book, but three things really stand out in my mind as being particularly awesome:

1. The "Designer Perspective" sidebars (insight into how some famous game designers got started and some behind-the-scenes knowledge about the industry)
2. The focus on iterative-design (prototype and test early and often)
3. The Exercises (real application exercises that hold your hand through the development of games, and of yourself as a career designer)

There were basically only two things I *didn't* like about this book, and they are purely circumstantial.

The first thing is that this book is college-textbook dense. Seriously. The page-count is just shy of 450 pages, and each page is divided into two columns, with a relatively small font-size. It was a beast to get through. There were many times when finishing the book felt like a daunting task, particularly towards the end.

The second thing that I wished was different was that the book's focus changes almost completely to digital game development (video games). The first half of the book was about basic game development, and so it could apply to either tabletop games or digital games; but as the book progresses, it makes a clear shift towards digital game development.

Realistically, this is not surprising -- the video game industry is gigantic, with revenues exceeding Box Office sales, and it keeps growing. The market for tabletop games is vastly smaller, domestically, and although it enjoys a much larger market share in Europe, particularly Germany, it is still comparatively diminuitive. So this particular nitpick is purely arbitrary, on my part -- I don't begrudge the authors for their decision regarding the content.

Best Game Design Book for starters

I am making a board game and after searching for books about game design I found this book. After reading it a little bit and comparing it with others I realised is the best book to start with.

Why?

- First, the book explains what a game is and its elements. Then it explains all the process of game design and finally it talks about working in the game industry. So this is a good overview of what is needed to start as a game designer.
- The book has a lot of examples of video games, board games and card games to explain each topic.
- Easy to read but more than enough for starters on game design.
- It has a lot of experienced designers perpectives on different topics, with good tips from them!
- Well edited with pictures and well organised

The only thing I would change of the book is that I would focus more on tabletop game design.

My Search Has Ended!

This book is honestly an answer to my prayers! I'm using the first half of this superb book to remodel my introductory game design class & after school game design club. The included exercises are definitely geared toward capturing the attention of the type of kids I want to attract to my program. I think I'm going to have to buy a 2nd book as my son is using the last half of the book to develop and market his senior game project and plan for his Indie game company :)

formatting in kindle edition needs work

I used the kindle edition of this book for an undergrad course in stats, however, I really, really wish I had gotten it in print. The formatting is off so you can't read equations, graphics, graphs etc. clearly. Had to switch books because it was so frustrating, couldn't read the homework problems.

it tries to explain things.

This book is pretty helpful in general but this will only apply to those who are good with math. For those who are like dummies in math, you will have hard time understanding the way equation works. It tries to explain things in a better tone with lots of example, but it needs more of explanation on how the equation came to be like that. If that's more explained, this book would be perfect for learning basic stats. Additionally, if you really want more complicated stats, this is not for you to study. This is the basics of all like ABC. If you want to write a sentence in terms of stats, then this will be to elementary for you.

About the Author
Carolyn Tennant, PhD, is a professor, pastor, and author who maintains an active speaking schedule across the United States and around the world. She ministers in district and national conferences, pastors retreats, district councils and camps, women s events, and churches. Dr. Tennant served for nearly thirty years at North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she was a professor and vice president. She is ordained in the Assemblies of God and currently works as an adjunct professor, teaching in the Doctor of Ministry program at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary of Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. She and her husband currently reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Unless the Lord builds the house...

Dr. Tennant brings the focus of the church back to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. She explains the currents of the five-fold ministry in a way that encourages and challenges the body of Christ to be faithful with the gifts that are given so that the bride will be prepared on the day that Jesus returns. There are so many encouraging stories and messages in this book for leaders and followers alike. It is a clear picture of how ministry is to work. I high recommend it.

This is a wonderful book by an amazing scholar and Christian leader. Dr. Tennant's unique understanding of the five ministry gifts and how they can best serve the local church is outstanding. As one who has been a church planter and pastor in several situations, I can only say that I wish this book had been available many years ago!

5 Ministry Currents of Revival

In Ephesians 4:11–12, the apostle Paul wrote: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up…” These five ministries played an obvious and fundamental role in the Church, according to the apostle, yet they are the occasion of no small amount of controversy today. Do the apostolic and prophetic ministries continue to operate today? If so, do they constitute offices within the Church? Should we call specific ministers “Apostle So-and-so” or “Prophet Such-and-such”?

Many classical Pentecostals believe that too much emphasis has been placed on office and more emphasize should be placed on function. In other words, the question should not be whether such-and-such a person bears the office and title of apostle or prophet but whether apostolic and prophetic functions are taking place in the Church. This emphasis on function is the position of the Assemblies of God. It is also the emphasis of Carolyn Tennant in her new book from Vital Resources, Catch the Wind of the Spirit. “The vast majority of teaching on this [subject] has focused on church leadership,” she writes. “I’m firmly convinced, however, that God is focused upon the ministry currents that each person is supposed to oversee. He means for the whole church to get involved.”

What are the five currents Ephesians 4 identifies? Tennant outlines them this way:

1. Seeing people come to Christ (The Powerful Wooing Current)
2. Ensuring new believers learn to follow Him closely and mature into what He desires them to be (The Radical Forming Current)
3. Caring for His disciples in the body of believers so they may stay health, and connected, and know they are loved (The Synchronized Choreography Current)
4. Providing direction for the church: correcting and restoring, affirming and encouraging (The Housecleaning Directional Current)
5. Pushing back the darkness and taking new territory for the kingdom of God (The Miraculous Sending Current)

Each chapter describing these currents is paired with a chapter describing, “what kind of people are needed to oversee the current and where they might be in our churches.” Tennant seems indifferent to whether these “overseers” are church offices filled by paid ministers, and she pays careful attention to “misconceptions” that frequently attach themselves to the ministries of apostles and prophets. Here are the “overseers” for each of the currents above, respectively:

1. The Evangelist
2. The Teacher
3. The Pastor
4. The Prophetic Servant
5. The Apostolic Emissary
Tennant clearly longs to experience the renewal and revitalization of North American churches. She is thoroughly Pentecostal in both theology and practice. (If you doubt that the Holy Spirit speaks directly to believers today, make sure to read the story she tells on pages 160–162 about the Spirit sending her to talk to a man in the parking lot of a run-down strip mall. It’s like a contemporary version of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch.) In addition to sharp biblical insight and poignant personal anecdotes, Tennant highlights the Spirit-filled missionary endeavors of St. Patrick and other Celtic missionaries in the early medieval era. That’s a surprising move, given how many Pentecostals, charismatics, and evangelicals view the state of the early medieval Church. On the other hand, when you see how downright “Pentecostal” those missionaries could be—including St. Patrick’s experience with speaking in tongues—you realize that the connection between a vibrant experience of the Spirit and power for mission to the world have always gone together, both biblically and in Church history.

I’ll wrap up my review by quoting Tennant’s concluding words:

"When God is free to move, as He is in revival, the Triune God brings a fresh flow of each and every current. The Trinity has been working in every one of them all along from the beginning, and the Three are all desirous of pouring out even more upon us. Will we receive it?"

That’s a very good question.

If you want to sound like a professional get this book

I have bought many products published by Andrew Gordon. I think his products are among THE VERY BEST there are. So many books about blues for keyboard are very amateur. I was DELIGHTED when my teacher who is a great musician herself turned me on to Andrew Gordon's products. FINALLY an opportunity to learn and play in an adult and professional capacity. Among the many wonderful qualities this book has, one that I particularly like is the way that Mr. Gordon integrates traditional blues licks and sounds with refreshing new ideas. Miles Davis continually reinvented himself. A musical style needs to retain its traditional elements in order to keep its idiomatic sound. Yet it also must be something organic that breathes, grows and develops. That's what Mr. Gordon does very successfully. And he has graciously decided to share his artistry with us so that we may have fun with it.
Addressing the issue of complaints about the quality of the keyboard voice in some of the recordings, I suggest you do not let such a minor detail stop you from experiencing the real meat of what these products have to offer. I cannot see how anyone who is really interested and able to play in a professional capacity could find anything wrong with these products. Note though, that the format of this book is a compilation of wonderful material but it doesn't offer a very detailed explanation of blues theory. For those just starting out in the blues, you might want to supplement this book with lessons from a qualified teacher of blues keyboard or another book that goes into fundamental detail about HOW to play the blues. I liken the format of this book not to a lesson that gives an overview of blues keyboard playing but rather like those jazz instruction books that assume you know how to play and want to study the transcriptions of the masters. Mr. Gordon is certainly one of the masters of playing blues keyboard as well as the other styles of music that he has published.
For those that love this material, I suggest a couple of Mr. Gordon's other products: "Keyboard Bass Lines" which gives examples of both traditional and innovative bass lines that one can improvise over and/or the CD plus its transcription of Mr. Gordon playing "Boogie Woogie and Blues". Both are fantastic.
I personally am very grateful to Mr. Gordon for making these materials accessible to us. The joy I have gotten from these materials is immeasurable.

Has tons of great sounding blues riffs!

There are an absurd amount of Blues Piano books out there, most of which suck, and don't actually teach you how to play, or teach you only by sight reading where your hands and ears don't know the blues sound well enough. There are three exceptions though, and the three wonderful blues piano books that should be mandatory for anyone looking to learn and improve, be they beginner or advanced intermediate, are:

1. Blues Piano -- Mark Harrison
2. Improvising Blues -- Tim Richards
3. 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs for Piano/Keyboards -- Andrew Gordon.

The first two out of the above mentioned three really take the time to give you a step by step method for understanding all of the blues genre, and how to develop both hands playing it, the scales, chordal theory, etc, along with dozens of great riffs. This book doesn't do that; it is, like other people have mentioned, a strict runs/licks book. However, with the examples chosen, you couldn't ask for more.

The riffs in this book are excellent; a lot of books on the blues, and people playing the blues, use some really cheesy riffs that sound very uncreative, uninspiring, and far too white. This book really hammers in tons of great sounding, truly bluesy riffs. It covers everything from funk, gospel, jazz, boogie woogie, n. orleans, and rock n' roll type of blues, and the way he transcribes the licks note for note really allows the player (with lots of practice!) to get a nice Ray Charles sound...aka: sounding natural, musical, and unforced.

I also like the fact that they aren't all in one key; I find that if a book uses only C or G then that leaves the door open to not practicing in other keys. This book forces you to learn different riffs in all kinds of different keys, and is one of the biggest reasons I was finally able to overcome my hesitancy with being able to transpose very common licks and runs into some of the harder keys to play that have more sharps/flats.

This book is great for both beginners through advanced intermediate...an invaluable resource to finally learn the riffs we've all heard thousands of times yet can't figure out ourselves. (The CD that comes with the book is great...played nice and slowly so you don't feel rushed, you can very clearly hear what's being played, and they are note for note transcriptions of the sheet music examples in the book).

Excellent Blues Riff Book

It has been somewhat difficult for the intermediate/advanced piano player to find a book of riffs and melodic ideas to add to their blues repetoire. This book, "100 Ultimate Riffs" is just what you're looking for..and it delivers what it's name implies. "100 Ultimate Riffs" provides a good mixture of chords and individual note runs that you would expect from such a book. It also provides riffs in different keys, wih a variety of rhythms.
NOTE: The riffs may be too daunting for the beginner, but anyone from early intermediate onwards will find useful and fun blues riffs in this book.
This is not a "how to" book, nor is it a compliation of blues "standards". This book does not provide theory or concept on progressions, turnarounds, etc....it is what it's name implies, a riffs book.

Of the several main contenders covering the diverse field, Tong's may be at once the most comprehensive and representative

Although I would agree that this text isn't a nail-biting page-turner, I have difficulty believing those reviewers who found the primary texts by the likes of Butler, Cixous, Irigaray so much livelier, more accessible and clear than Tong's explanations. Post-structuralist criticism, especially following upon the heels of French thinkers like Lacan and Derrida, became dense, esoteric, and difficult beyond the understanding of even many Ph.D.s with its specialist jargon and self-referential, seemingly private, inquiries/demonstrations into the limits and possibilities of human language. Feminist criticism--originally influenced heavily my male thinkers in the areas of structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modernist thought--was no different. In fact, its frequently recondite, difficult, and impenetrable prose led to many revolts by undergraduate women against feminist theory itself.

For this reason, Tong's book was especially valuable during feminism's heyday--an organized approach to the entire field as well as an accessible explication of the major, primarily female, feminist thinkers. Given the movement's declining influence as the 1990s came to an end, it was important that Tong came out with this new edition--not only to address developments since the 2nd edition--including the so-called "backlash"--but to serve as a reminder that even if feminist theory had lost much of its popularity and influence, it was still alive--and many of its most influential voices, if less heard from due to apathy and new priorities, were merely waiting to be rediscovered by later, intellectually curious students.

While there are always those who will deride "theory" (French theory, especially, has never been popular with American academics), thinking about what we normally do without thinking--in effect, thinking about thinking--is critical to the life of mind which, in a desperate world where only survival and political action count, becomes a "necessary luxury," a sure sign that all human actions and behavior aren't determined exclusively by the herd. Moreover, theory offers a useful paradigm, a structure, a conceptual framework for what would otherwise be an occasionally diverting but rather incoherent chorus of various, individual voices. The danger we face, especially since the downloading, piecing-out, and "atomizing" of texts by the many individual hyper-spatial "files" (fragments of what were once whole and complete works, albums, suites) is exactly the sort of disarray that theory seeks to organize and clarify--and to do so without "reducing" the original works and their authors to mere talking points and topic sentences in an overly broad, sweeping, homogenizing overview. Tong's strength is that she covers the field without misrepresenting its individual voices. The reader has every right to trust her and her carefully chosen words.

Textbook.

Purchased for a WMST class. Very, very dry. Hard to tell if the material or the way this was organized and written made it so dry, as a lot of feminist work is very interesting and dynamic. If used in a classroom setting, effective. If you're picking this up to learn about feminist theory for fun, I would reconsider.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms

This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.
