"Through Kriya, one acquires peace, intelligence and honor. The life span is extended and one attains Samadhi." – Shyama Charan Lahiri, Laws of Manu 1:106
"Kriya Secrets Revealed: Lessons and Techniques Workbook" details the original teachings of the Kriya Yoga techniques and philosophies as taught by its founder, Shyama Charan Lahiri, aka Lahiri Mahasaya or “Lahiri,” 19th century India.
At over 400 pages, "Kriya Secrets Revealed" is not your ordinary Kriya book! This unique book/practical workbook contains every possible resource and description (and illustration) necessary to assist those seeking deeper spiritual understanding through the practice of Kriya Yoga. In addition to describing Lahiri’s Seven Steps of Kriya (beginning to advanced techniques), and as a Kriya-for-all, mindful work, “Kriya Secrets Revealed” also includes descriptions of variations of the Lahiri lessons as presented by different main-line Kriya schools. Readers will also find a reprint of Swami Yogananda’s Kriya (i.e. “Art of Super Realization,” 1930, now public domain) and information from several other sources related to the practice of Kriya. For those who appreciate a starting point, worksheets with suggested practice routines are offered as well. The essays sprinkled throughout the book were written based on the author’s (J.C. Stevens’) insights, which reflect three decades of regular Kriya practice and years of research, including research into original texts relating to Kriya. These essays are meant to provide context for the author’s perspective, satisfy reader curiosity, and as discussions surrounding the theories and philosophies of Lahiri Mahasaya. For reader convenience, a glossary of Sanskrit and other non-English terms, as well as an Index, are also included.
Why was this information published for the public? J.C. Stevens, the book’s author, practiced Kriya for decades without reaching his higher spiritual goals. As a graduate of Physics from UCLA, he knew that the science behind Kriya was sound; but as a practicing yogi, his intuition was telling him that there was more to Kriya than he had been taught through the (Kriya-based) church he attended growing up. In 2013, after Stevens had answered many of his own questions about Kriya through independent research, he made the decision to reveal what he had learned in the form of a book/practical workbook for other aspirants who felt the need to delve deeper into their Kriya practice (i.e. “Kriya Secrets Revealed: Lessons and Techniques Workbook”).
Note from the author: “If you are currently a member of an organization that teaches Kriya, the information in this book may surprise you or challenge your beliefs. Please know that nothing contained within its pages is meant to disrupt anyone’s previous personal beliefs, but merely to assist or enlighten those who have sensed missing information about Kriya and its practice. In gathering knowledge in the formation of this book, every source was researched, including original text held in the National Library of India, which, with the help of Bangla translators, I studied and, in some cases, re-translated through a growing understanding of the text’s language, as well as through intuition gained from practicing Kriya. The decision to publish these findings was also the result of my own frustration with finding variations of Kriya on the Internet that professed to be the ‘only true Kriya.’ I trust that this book will help other likeminded souls avoid this same frustration.” - J.C. Stevens
Lahiri Mahasaya repeatedly reminded his students, “Do not wait for advice to practice Kriya,” urging them to break free of limited thoughts and to become supremely Self-empowered, recognizing that the ability to understand the universe lies within. Only a starting point is necessary. Kriya Yoga can serve as that point.

About the Author
At nine years old, JC Stevens began attending weekly Sunday school services at a Temple that offered Kriya Yoga to its adult followers, and beginning meditation practices to its children members. As soon as Stevens reached the allowable age (17 years old), he received initiation into Kriya Yoga by a monastic in the same organization. In 1994, Stevens earned a degree in Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as one of the top three students in the Physics Department. A few years after receiving his undergraduate degree, he was offered instant enrollment into a UCLA graduate program, where he pursued studies in Engineering and taught Physics to undergraduates. As any true seeker, he remained dedicated to his Kriya practice and the pursuit of living a righteous, God-centered life. In building a career after college, Stevens lived in several countries around the world and on three continents. During this time he mastered the German language and learned conversational Swedish, Czech, Spanish and Russian. Through decades of research into religious history and theory, he developed skills in Sanskrit. Stevens currently resides in a small town in Western Europe. Similarly to Lahiri Mahasaya, he is a householder himself. Theirs is a home filled with love and effervescent devotion to God. In addition to fulfilling his familial and work responsibilities, Stevens assists others in his community.

Excellent, clear, precise, and complete instruction on the Kriya Yoga methods of Lahiri Mahasaya
By Monkey
The instructions in this book regarding the kriya yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya are vastly superior to anything available anywhere else. They're clear, concise, easy to understand, and practicable. The quality of the techniques themselves are of excellent calibre, in comparing the experiences and perceived progress with other systems of kriya yoga/"spinal breathing pranayama".
I docked a star because the author has a tendency to go into long-winded ramblings regarding his own personalized theosophy and how it relates to Kriya Yoga, which I find distracting and unnecessary. If I see a paragraph like that approaching, I usually just skip over it, instead of rubbing my temples through the whole thing.
However, not a single detail is missed, and all of the kriyas of LM are given due and complete consideration and exposition. While I consider the price of this book unusually high, it has proven to be worth every penny.
On a random tangent, as a comparative example, I've practiced 4 systems of Kriya Yoga:
1) Bihar Yoga Bharati ("A Systematic Course in the Ancient Tantric Techniques of Yoga and Kriya"): A system of 20 meditation kriyas, but following mostly different paths than this one. This system almost completely does away with silent, coordinated concentration practices, which I've come to realize are absolutely essential at the end of every kriya practice to stabilize and calm the energies that've been kicked up during the practice, along with establishing the real fruit and intent of kriya practices, which is meditative absorption. These practices made me irritable, socially withdrawn, and very neurotic. It was because of these practices that I would abandon yoga and meditation altogether for several years.
2) SRF/Yogananda: Besides the instructions being of very poor quality, difficult to understand, and uneasy to implement, this was by far the worst system of Kriya yoga that I practiced. I abandoned them after I'd felt that I'd gotten nothing out of the experience for over a year, except wasted time. And the people who ascribe to it as a religion are weird. Nice, but weird.
3) Yogani/AYPsite.org: Yogani has taken what appears to be Yogananda's system of Kriya and blended it with traditional yoga and tested his system of techniques very thoroughly. They work very well and produce many amazing and miraculous benefits. I credit his system of techniques with reawakening my desire to regularly meditate, and invigorating it with a newfound life. My qualm regarding his system is that it's haphazardly put together in a monologue/Q&A format and no real intention, in 15 years, has existed to put the pieces together in an easily readable, understandable, step-by-step format -- So that after a person takes up his practices, figuring out what to do next after one has gained skill, confidence, and experience in his current practices is needlessly difficult and undefined. My second biggest qualm regarding his system, which was something that plagued me through the entire time I practiced his techniques, is that they do not produce the meditative absorptiveness of Lahiri Mahasaya's system. I'm not entirely certain why, as they produce many other things in super-abundance (small coincidental miracles, intensity of perception, gratitude and bliss, an intimate sense of connectedness and oneness with people and creation...)
4) The Kriya Yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya (as explained in this book, and other sources that corroborate these techniques): They're excellent, simple, elegant, progressive, and they make logical sense in their execution. I should divulge that I've only been practicing these techniques for about a week now, but already I've experienced a depth of meditative absorptiveness I haven't experienced in close to a decade, at nearly the very beginning of using these techniques. I also suddenly started hearing the "om" sound shortly after I began these techniques. The sound persists throughout the day and is audible when I stop what I'm doing and calmly listen. In this way, the techniques provide measurable and provable milestones for progress - something that only exists outside of yoga in the Buddhist meditation "mind maps." A highly useful tool for keeping oneself on track, and not deluding oneself about one's progress or stage of attainment. I'm excited for what the future of practicing these techniques will bring.

EDIT (6/15/15)
After practicing the techniques for the last few months, and trying to really hammer out and perfect even just the first kriya pranyama technique (along with the preceding maha mudra, navi/om japa, talabya...), I'm giving the full 5 stars, regardless of the religious/christian overtones and sections. These techniques are simply phenomenal. Attempting to perform ALL of the details just for KP1 is extraordinarily difficult, but it makes galaxies of difference compared to omitting some of them to make the technique more easier to perform (trust me). A gentle, peaceful happiness pervades my entire day; I'm extremely clear-headed with a crystalline focus; I'm quick-witted, witty, and creative in conversation; I seem to have endless stores of energy that I don't know the source of; I feel other-worldly (I'm guessing this is bliss) each time I finish the techniques with mental pranayama; I occasionally feel bolts of physical ecstasy during KP 1, and my breathing becomes so placid I occasionally become concerned that I haven't been breathing. While I have experienced samadhi a couple times during an extended, intensive personal meditation retreat, the technique at that time was simply a combination of sitting mental japa, and insight techniques when not sitting (all day long, with only 5-6 hours of sleep, and a lot of psychological torment and anguish). With these kriya techniques, which are not static concentration practices like japa, I have no idea what the experience is going to be like when one obliviously slips into samadhi during the technique as the concentration naturally intensifies and the relaxation hits the critical sweet spot. But I remember that leading up to it, suddenly becoming concerned that I wasn't breathing anymore had become a frequent occurrence. I would relish the chance to experience it again. There's nothing like it, and finding any words for the experience took months of analysis on my memories of the entirety of the experience, before, during, and after. Both the experience and the after-effects are, despite the indescribable beauty of it, categorically and undeniably eery in a supernatural way.
For those who write reviews poo-poo-ing the book, its author, or the techniques without giving them fair and due diligence, all I can say is: The proof of the pudding is in the eating. And if you're afraid that eating the pudding will threaten the pudding you've already devoted yourself to, there's really no need to submit a review. Just keep on with what you've got. But if you're even here, then maybe a little honesty with yourself is appropriate. You're probably curious that there might be a better way, likely out of dissatisfaction with your results, as I had been with many of my prior experiences. Even if you gave something new a chance, all you would lose is time. But you would gain valuable knowledge from the experience that you could use to help shape your spiritual future, and there's nothing more valuable than that spiritual wisdom borne of one's personal experience.

If I could give this book 6 stars I would! Not your ordinary Kriya book
By N. Cole
This book is spiritual gold! When I read the book's description, I was skeptical but curious, so I went ahead and purchased it. Everything promised by the author, J.C. Stevens, was true, and more! Finally, the Kriya techniques and lessons as developed by Lahiri Mahasaya are fully explained through narrative based on historical evidence and illustrations and here made available to anyone who wishes to advance their Kriya practice to the highest level possible. As the title promises, secrets previously withheld by organizations or oaths of secrecy surrounding Kriya are no longer secret--a move that Stevens argues was a reflection of Mahasaya's true intent and attitude toward lessons in Kriya.
Another argument that Stevens wins, in my mind, is that of the Kriya Yogi "householder." For those of you who don't know the history of Lahiri Mahasaya; he was born in the late 1800's, and was a married family man who was taught the science of pranayama from Babaji, the legendary yogi who resided (or resides, as some believe) in the Himalayas. After returning to his family after his Himalayan experiences, Mahasaya developed what he termed, "Kriya," a scientific approach to enlightenment through pranayama for the "modern man."
As a married man myself, I found it refreshing that Stevens takes this idea of yoga for the modern man and makes it practical. The lessons include schedules and a kind of workbook along with a compelling narrative that help the "regular guy" (or gal) maintain a healthy, active life with family and work while at the same time pursuing the spiritual path. The successful yogi does not (and perhaps should not) isolate himself from the world (do the cave thing), but rather embraces these familial and work interactions as important extensions of his or her practice. My wife was certainly pleased with this interpretation, and I felt a sudden sense of relief myself for finally not feeling guilty if I could not meditate for long periods of time. The truth is, as Stevens argues, Kriya is such a powerful science that these long meditations are not necessary even to reach the highest levels of spiritual enlightenment - and in fact can be detrimental to some as an addiction or excuse from life.
You might also want to know that, as a bonus, the book includes several other relevant resources in addition to the helpful illustrations and Kriya instructions, including a reprint of the 1930 version of Kriya Yoga by Paramahansa Yogananda (author of "Autobiography of a Yogi"), the 144 Kriyas of Babaji, as well as secret techniques from the Rhadasoami path. All this in one book makes the small price tag a great buy as well.
If I could give this book 6 stars I would!

Finally
By louienapoli
A wonderfully comprehensive and clear self-study manual that assumes the reader has no knowledge of Kriya Yoga and needs to start from scratch. Now, please keep in mind that despite being hailed as a rocket ship to Enlightenment, those who supposedly practice Kriya Yoga tend to be a bitchy, gossipy group hellbent on claiming that anyone but their particular guru is teaching it all wrong. Even Yogananda gets criticized for dumbing it down for Westerners who needed the baby steps version. Now, there are good Kriya teachers and not so good Kriya teachers, and there are effective Kriya techniques and not so effective Kriya techniques, but the battle over which is authentic is a tough one. (I confess a bias in favor of Swami Hariharananda, my teacher and a wonderful guru).
Part of the problem is the secrecy. Since very little was committed to writing, there is no real way to measure whether a given method conforms to what Sri Yukteswar or Lahiri Mahasaya taught, with those two generally considered the fathers of Kriya Yoga, and Yogananda often coming in for a drubbing for watering it down. The author clarifies and demystifies the steps and makes this method available to all. He even includes Yogananda's instructions for employing the technique. And, for the sake of completeness, he includes with a subtle caveat the approach of a popular teacher from Canada. As far as straight up traditional Kriya Yoga, this book is not only great, it's the only game in town as far as I know. There are other books with other approaches, like books from the Bihar School, and they're wonderful, but they don't attempt to teach the Yukteswar-Mahasaya Kriya technique that is the Big Kahuna of Kriya, and they don't focus exclusively on Kriya Yoga.
I do want to note there are considerable differences between this book's methods and the ones I learned and use; however, I suspect the methods offered here are effective and certainly worth trying. The next best thing to having a great teacher.
