About the Author
RAVI ZACHARIAS is founder and chairman of the board of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, headquartered in Atlanta. Dr. Zacharias and his wife, Margie, have three grown children.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better than this one

We ask it every day. We ask it in the big things and the small things. We ask it when our world implodes around us and when we explode into our world. It is a universal question asked in every human language and guttural moan imaginable. It is asked the world over, from the richest to the poorest, from the East to the West, from ancient times to our modern days. It is a question inherent to our being, the answer to which provides the answer for our ontological longing.

Why Suffering?

Zacharias begin the book by elaborating on the question. What it is the people mean when they ask this question? How are we supposed to answer? Among other things, he develops the difference between the intellectual question and the personal question. In other words, the beginnings of an answer lie in why the question is being asked. Is this just another intellectual exercise for a skeptic or have they recently been through a tragic loss. Zacharias suggests that while the problem of evil can be discussed philosophically, it is usually best answered pastorally.

From this introduction, Zacharias and Vitale trade chapters on various responses to the problem of suffering. Space prohibits a full analysis, so suffice it to say that Zacharias writes on the responses of freedom and morality while Vitale writes about grace, the Cross, and hope. Zacharias also writes a magnificent chapter midway through that compares the Christian answer to the answers from Buddhism, Islam, and naturalism.

Every chapter in the book is a goldmine. I suggest you take just over a week to read this book and focus on one chapter a day. Let the material sink it, grapple with it, think through it, and incorporate it into your own life.

One thing to note: Ravi and Vince could not have more different writing styles. Ravi’s writes the way he speaks, with such precision and clarity that I can hear the lilt of his voice in my head as I read his thoughts. Vince’s writing is more rugged and conversational and also fits his own personality and speaking tone. It’s jarring, at times, if you read more than one chapter at a time, but does not affect the quality of the book.

You could fill a library with the books on this subject, but in my opinion, there is none better for the average reader than what Zacharias and Vitale offer here. Clear, simply stated answers confirmed through a wealth of resources. Everyone needs to read this book because everyone deals with this question. Do yourself and those around you a favor and pick it up now.

The question of why there is suffering in this world is a difficult one, and a personal one for many, but in "Why Suffering?" the authors address this thorny issue with a wonderful balance of considered thought, studied Philosophy, and personal insight. The authors write in a warm and easily readable tone, while still taking the topic seriously and considering it from a number of angles.

Whether you are someone struggling through suffering yourself, someone supporting a friend through a difficult time, a Christian wanting to know how faith answers this difficult question, or an agnostic wanting to see whether the claims of religion stand up in the face of evil: this well-considered, intellectually rigorous, and deeply insightful book is a must read.

One of the most helpful and thought provoking books I have read in a long time.

I couldn't stop eating this book!

Why Suffering? is a relatively small book (229 pages) that is crammed full of very large questions and even larger answers. Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale each offer several chapters that respond to the contention that “if there really is a loving God, there would be no pain and suffering in the world.”
While the topics of logic and reason may not be at the top of anyone's “Conversation Starters” list, the authors use both to provide intellectual answers to emotional questions. They differentiate between logic and reason, making clear that “using logic as a test for truth and reasoning does not always result in the same implications of what is true...It is imperative that we understand not only the logical problem that is being presented but the reasoning process that we are bringing to bear upon this very important question.”
Almost every page of the book prompts highlighting nuggets that bear further study; they make you want to call your study partner to share an “aha” discovery.
Whether you are a Christian or a skeptic or a seeker, this book will provide you with hours of inspiration and many interesting topics for conversation.

I learned SQL 25 years ago. i wish this book had existed then, instead of the expensive, hard to understand computer books that existed back then. I also bought Mike McGrath's PHP/Mysql and Python books.

Excellent book for those new to SQL

1. Easy to follow along and explains everything in simple language

2. Illustrated with the queries and outputs from MySQL (both Windows and Linux) so you don't get lost

3. Doesn't waste your time with necessary crap, explaining only what's important

4. The book comes with data and scripts so that you can follow along every step of the way

I am extremely happy that I learned the basic of SQL with this book. Highly recommended to those with little previous programming experience. Fast and insightful learning experience.

more philosophic than how to advice

I found this book to be more "lofty and philosophical" than practical hands on advice, such as, "Sometimes if you join a chartiy you can meet people with common interests. The more you socialize with these people the more comfortable you will be in those settings" as opposed to other books which say, "go to charity events. If you can't afford the ticket go to the pre or post party or volunteer for the charity to get on the guest list." Also, the constant reference to prince and princess got a little annoying as did the typos. This book is FILLED with typing and grammatical errors. It actually makes me have little respect for the publisher who let this go to print. That said, there are some gems of wisdom on the pages of this book and if you suffer from a lack of self confidence or feel deep down you don't deserve to be treated and spoiled by someone else's money, this is the book for you. I regard this book more as a self help book to gain confidence than a meet a rich man book.

A delightful fun read and a charming, sensible, information filled, point by point approach to getting the man of your dreams. Ms. Spangler is so right on with her advice. She shares the lessons she has learned and observed through her own and girlfriends experiences while dating, in a clever tell all. She expounds things my mother told me that I didn't always listen to and should have. To find your prince charming, read and follow Donna's advice and pass this book along to all your single girlfriends!

The author writes with a strong realistic style, peppered with many details.

Kevin has headed to Austin to start a new life with his brother Jack who is married to Tito. The two men own a bar and Kevin has agreed to work as the bouncer there. He's a big man and it's not a difficult job. After Kevin's disastrous affair with Larry, a guy he was supposed to marry, he is surprising himself by checking out the local talent.

Now there was a guy who could put the hitch back into my giddyup.

Kevin is into signs, as in signs from some higher power, which is cute but a little strange. Good sign - the smell of coffee; bad sign- snow dripping down his neck when he was thinking about his ex. As this story is told in first person from Kevin's point of view, you get all of them. But he has quite a romantic turn of phrase.

I hoped for a new life here...and for a man to kiss me as though he would be shipwrecked without me.

Because Tito was a boxer with a mean ex-wife, when he hits a guy who had been hitting his wife, Kevin takes the charges for him. He also gets involved in a threesome with two of the bar waiters - he's having fun, sort of, but he can't help but be attracted to this cop (Cruz) who seems to keep turning up at all sorts of weird places, like the airport, the drycleaners and places like that. The kids business was really hard to read - I hate hearing about mother's who use their children as pawns in some sick game about money, and Tito's ex was the worse in my opinion.

The relationship between Cruz and Kevin was hard to get a handle on - not only because of the two waiters who were still in on the action, but also because we only get the story from Kevin's point of view. I would have loved to have known what Cruz thought when he saw Kevin for the first time, or how he reacted to the lack of phone calls. The issue with the children did get sorted, thanks to Cruz, and that was one positive, but if you are looking for escapism, this probably isn't the book for you. The author writes with a strong realistic style, peppered with many details about Austin itself, which was interesting, but I found the character connection that I was looking for hard to find.

Kevin is moving to Austin to help out his brother and his husband. Kevin's life fell apart after his partner left him. He's down on his luck looking for a sign that everything will be okay. He's hoping that he'll find that sign in Austin.

Jack (Kevin's brother) and Tito own a bar/restaurant and want Kevin's help to work as a bouncer. They are in a huge custody battle of Tito's children and need a little more flexibility in the schedules. He is hoping to find a love like his brother's, something he knows he never had with his ex-partner. Can he find the man of his dreams in the great state of Texas or will he end up the middle of a man sandwich?

The Bouncer was an enjoyable read. I loved Tito and Jack. I was intrigued by Tito's situation and his kids. Kevin wasn't that stand out character for me. Yes he is the MC but I found myself more interested in the supporting characters. I have read this author before and would definitely recommend.

I enjoyed the story

I’m just not sure how to review this, I enjoyed the story, Kevin reconnecting with his brother meeting his brother’s husband, the staff, the kids. The love interest with the Dixon even the funny scenes around town and driving.

The menage between the charaters was sexy and the fact that Kevin seems to be horny for anything male was fun.

The sub story of then all trying to help Tito get his kids back was sweet, and by the end you are really gunning for Tito and the kids.

My big issue, it seemed like to me, was this could have used another edit or some more polishing. It felt a little jumpy. Kept thinking, how did we end up here or did that just finish?
