At first glance, 'ethics' is not necessarily a subject conventionally associated with film. Film is often regarded as a form of 'lowbrow' popular culture, either offering bland entertainment or deliberately setting out to shock - or, more cynically, generate box office revenue - through gratuitous inclusion of sex and violence. Certainly, there have always been a minority of films based on the stereotypically 'ethical' subject of religion, but these have often generated the most controversy, from the studio system decree that it was blasphemous to represent the corporeal body of Christ to the furore surrounding Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). This book shows that from the silent era to the present day, film has been inherently concerned with ethical issues. In this light, the definition of ethics that informs the volume and is taken as the starting point of each of the chapters is the notion of personal or institutional motivation; most usually because a character or industry figure makes a decision or choice based on their own moral - or ethical - code. Once this is defined, the ethical dimension to films is immediately evident. This book takes as its central theme the difficulty of decisions refracted through personal ethical codes, and thus recognises that what counts as ethics, or morality, is always subjective. Some of the chapters explore films which take conventionally 'good' ethical standpoints, others investigate why 'bad' decisions were made; at least one explores the celebration of practices invoking popular disgust, but all the contributions study ethical decisions within film that represent the strongly felt convictions of those involved and, moreover, address aspects of filmmaking which force the spectator to be an active and reciprocal participant in the creation of meaning, thus implicitly acknowledging that ethics are subjective and in perpetual flux rather than fixed, objective truths.

Als Peter Handke 1996 "Gerechtigkeit f�r Serbien" forderte, hallte ein Aufschrei der Emp�rung durch die deutschsprachigen Feuilletons. Bereits nach wenigen Wochen war "Gerechtigkeit" nicht nur f�r Serbien, sondern auch f�r den �sterreichischen Dichter in weite Ferne ger�ckt.
Das Buch stellt die damaligen Reaktionen in den Kontext der deutschsprachigen Balkanberichterstattung und zeigt auf, dass Handke mit seinen Bemerkungen so falsch nicht lag. Dass er den Finger in die Wunde gelegt hatte, verdeutlichte die von ihm ausgel�ste Kontroverse, die zu einer der gr��ten Literaturdebatten des Jahrzehnts wurde und bis heute anh�lt.
�Gerechtigkeit f�r Serbien�, am 5./6. und 13./14. Januar 1996 vorab in der Wochenendbeilage der S�ddeutschen Zeitung ver�ffentlicht, war auch �ber die Grenzen des deutschen Sprachraumes hinaus der Literaturskandal des Jahres. Der K�rntner Autor Peter Handke hatte in Prolog und Epilog seines Reiseberichts aus der Republika Srpska die Jugoslawien-Berichterstattung deutscher, franz�sischer und US-amerikanischer Printmedien als antiserbisch bezeichnet und u.a. einige Schriftstellerkollegen und Intellektuelle f�r ihr Engagement zugunsten von Kroaten und bosnischen Muslimen ger�gt. Die Kritik an Zeitungen wie FAZ, Le Monde oder Der Spiegel konnte bei diesen aufgrund ihrer traditionalistischen Balkan-Berichterstattung nur auf Ablehnung sto�en. Dennoch fiel auf, dass sich recht bald eine Phalanx von b�rgerlichen �ber liberalen bis hin zu linken Medien gegen Handkes Thesen stellte. Bereits nach wenigen Wochen war �Gerechtigkeit� nicht nur f�r Serbien, sondern auch f�r den �sterreichischen Dichter in immer weitere Ferne ger�ckt.

A superb teaching tool

I'm a teacher of contemporary European history and I have used this essay of Sartre's in class. It is evocative, intelligent and sharp. It is an ideal complement to a general textbook on modern French or European history when you reach World War Two. The translation, which was originally published in Raritan, the literary journal, is terrific. Several of my students commented that it didn't seem like a translation at all. The translator, Lisa Lieberman, deserves praise both for the quality of her work and for the introduction she contributes. I hope this book will be the forerunner of many more. This book at least is a very useful teaching tool.

Excellent

An honest and painful rendering of the Parisian intellectual mindset just after the occupation ended. Satre is doing his best to explain the ambiguity and resisted but acknowledged guilt, while at the same time making a case for understanding. The translation felt totally seamless...it rang like I imagine Satre's voice rang, and I enjoyed the intro, too: it set the table for the essay very well.

The occupation from a French perspective

I've read dozens of books on World War II in Europe, including several books and articles about the German occupation of France, but most of these were strictly factual accounts that said little about the aftereffects of the occupation on the French psyche. There were, of course, the bombastic speeches of de Gaulle that made it sound as if the French people singlehandedly rose up and drove out the Germans. Sartre's essay "Paris Under the Occupation" countered this conceited optimism with a much more somber, humble tone. Addressing foreign readers, Sartre wrote that "Everything that London suffered with pride, Paris suffered in shame and despair." Shame that France had fallen to the Germans in only a few weeks; shame for Vichy; and the shame of France's symbiotic relationship with the occupying Germans, a mostly passive resistance that in effect made France a nation of collaborators. Sartre gives a very different perspective of France during the occupation, one that is not very complimentary of the French, but at the same time asks for the reader's understanding.

Kudos to Lisa Lieberman for a fine translation and a marvelous introduction to the essay.

Very good explanation of fund management for beginners.
This is a good and well-organised attack on the subject - the format is clear and how it has helped me to understand the basics of fund management and I understand from others that it is also useful for experienced fund managers. It has gone some way to restoring my faith in the industry post Equitable, etc.

Was recommended this book by a colleague and have been thoroughly impressed by it.
Brentani has done a great job at producing a book that is well structured, clear, concise with thoughtful examples and a great glossary and thus perfect for the novice, whilst at the same time including all the essentials that would make this book an excellent reference for the experienced practitioner.

I didn't know much about the world of portfolio management, but I thought it was time to pick up some information on the topic. This book gave me an extremely good grounding on most aspects of portfolio management. I feel more knowledgeable and confident now when talking about investments to professional money managers and friends. I would definitely recommend this book.
