This is a well written and beautifully photographed cookbook

This is a well written and beautifully photographed cookbook, but in addition to being pleasurable to read and lovely to look at it contains fabulous recipes. The food is authentic, but approachable and the flavors are unbeatable. So far I've made her recipe for red borsch, the chicken soup, the porcini soup, Varenyky, Manty, (both dumplings) wasp nest buns, the Moldovan flatbreads and Pampushky (both breads: one flat and one yeasted). All of them turned out amazing and are on their way to becoming classic favorites in our household. Olia Hercules herself is a wonderful, warm lover of food and her connection to these recipes comes across in this book. It is clear that this, for her, was a labor of love. If you grew up eating food from any of the regions she represents in Mamushka, if you are an adventurous cook, if you are a lover of good food and good recipes----buy this book! I've gotten copies for many friends and family members so far. It's really an amazing text and deserves its place at the top of all of the "Best of 2015" cookbook lists this past year.

This is the best book I found on Russian cuisine

This is the best book I found on Russian cuisine! I was born and grew up in Russia, and moved to the US 15 years ago. It's been challenging to use Russian recipes in the US (different measuring units, the ingredients may not be the same etc). The recipes in this book are the closest I've found to authentic Russian and Eastern European dishes. Also, my husband is an Armenian from Baku and I've been pleasantly surprised to find many recipes from Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. And the pictures are so beautiful and authentic! If you are interested in Eastern European cuisine, get this book. You won't regret it!

Super!

This is an excellent book. It shows you the battle plans in the main closed systems and gave you a lot of advice about how to play the middlegame and the endgame.
Maybe the most important subject is the move order in the opening so you'll never be playing what your oponent want to play.

Absolute gem on strategic way of taught

Mednis wrote a real joy for every chess player who wants to reasure himself about plans in closed positions. If one dont play d4 as white, he would find a lot of material from the black side of board. In some critical moments author devotes virtually the whole page just to explain a future plans. Fantastic for everyone unsure in kind of way to play transition from opening to middlegame. This is for sure one of the most important books ever written about early middlegame plans after 1.d4 (thanks god, its algebraic notation)

Tremendously instructive work on the closed game

This is my favorite book by Mednis, and I have several of them. If you play 1. d4, this is, in my opinion, an essential book. Mednis carefully explains the strategic underpinnings of all the major d4 openings. He deliberately does not go overboard on tactically heavy openings, because he did not wish this to be a book on tactics. For instance, there is only one game on the Benoni. But you know the irony of that? His one game makes the Benoni understandable, as does his one game in the Benko Gambit (many other games in the annotations). Many other books have purported to explain the "ideas" and "strategy" behind the openings, but I have never seen a book do this so effectively. This book far exceeds works in its genre. For instance, it must be compared to such works as: Chernev's "Logical Chess" and "Most Instructive Games," and John Nunn's recent "Understanding Chess, Move by Move." For my money (literally and figuratively), "Strategic Chess, Mastering the Closed Game," far exceeds those other works, for several reasons. Regarding "Logical Chess," most chess players consider that book an incredible learning tool for newer players. It brings chess to life for many people. However, it has several major limitations: it does not deal with modern openings; it wastes many pages worth of material reiterating the same exact thoughts; its explanations are often quite superficial; and it frustrates in its failure to really explain the more complex moves. Mednis' work shines brilliantly on all these points: it handles all major modern closed openings; it never wastes ink on redundancy; its explanations are concise, poignant, and always illuminating; and it does not shy away from tactical complexity, althought that is not the focus of the book. Regarding Chernev's "Masterpieces" and Nunn's "Understanding," I do not wish to point out flaws in either of those books (Because they are both five star books to me), but in one very crucial way, the present book by Mednis is far more important to me than those books: namely, it is focused on the closed (d4) games, so it is a singular treatise on them. In that sense, it provides a comprehensive course on the d4 openings, in a way that completely prepares you to understand and play both sides of d4 openings (there is coverage of the English, Dutch, and Torre as well. Of course, this book is not an opening treatise on any particular d4 opening, so it is not a substitute for books on one specific opening. For instance, if you are going to play the Queen's Gambit Declined, you still will want to have Marovic's "Play the Queen's Gambit" or Sadler's "Queen's Gambit Declined".) By contrast, the Chernev and Nunn books are all over the map in terms of openings. The Nunn and Chernev books contain beautifully annotated games, but the games do not go together as a cohesive whole, as they do in this Mednis book. This point significantly diminishes the value of those books to me. Those books contain snapshots of beautiful chess, and they are great books as far as they go; but this Mednis book is a living instructional course on queen pawn openings, and for that it is unique and essential. Also, the games that he has chosen to illustrate his strategic themes are very beautiful games. At under ten bucks, this Dover book is one of the best values in the whole literature of chess.

Wonderfully written fantastical children's book about what millions of kids dream about--a flying car!

My 4 and 7 year old boys and I love this book (and the 4-year-old just turned 4, so he was loving it as a 3-year-old too)! We are only half-way through it, but when I ordered it, I was hoping that it would deliver, and it has! I had never read anything by Ian Fleming before, but I was happy to see he has that wonderful narrative voice, similar to the Naria and Pooh books (as in, something like, my words, not his- "Now, you might be wondering how a car could make her thoughts known. Well, if you think about it, if you really set your mind to figuring it out, then you might..."...etc etc. --talking right to the reader as though the narrator and I know each other). He has the very long sentences (reminded me of Pooh also a bit), with fabulous punctuation (either his or the publisher's). So all of this makes it fun for me to read, in this delightful fantastical style. But then, you talk about a flying car, and bad guys, and guns, and a skeleton--my boys love it! A movie mentioning those things might scare them, but a book is manageable.

It's not a non-stop action packed book, just note that. There are a few pictures, but not a lot. My boys have been sitting for long books since they were very young and we're blessed that they have patience for it, but I definitely speed up in parts and try out voices, read to them outside, etc. to keep it moving. Really, you could sum up the action pretty quickly, but the book is really a lot more than the action anyway. It's entering the world of these characters, getting to know them, journeying with them, and getting to watch a car turn into a boat or fly or make snide remarks through the dashboard! And it's great for the young children to create their own pictures in their heads. There are a few books after this first one, and my kids already are excited about reading those. And they ask me to read Chitty Chitty every day. I look forward to showing them the movie at some point too, so they can compare.

Daughter loves

This was my daughter's first taste of a book vs a movie. She is only 10 and had never read a book after seeing the movie first. She kept asking why the book was different from the movie. While she prefers the movie, I am sure in time she will see how books and movie differ most of the time and that as in most situations this book is indeed better than the movie.

Great Reference For Any Skill Level

This is truly a great reference book for any skill level. I've been developing Android apps for years now, and I keep coming back to this book. The problem/solution approach makes it really easy, as the authors have thought of hundreds of pages worth of tasks that all Android developers need to accomplish at some point.

While I often use this book as a reference while I'm trying to accomplish tasks, I also enjoy paging through and just finding interesting "recipes" to learn. It really helps me keep current with certain tasks that I don't perform regularly, like geofencing and custom view creation. As a freelance Android developer it's important that I keep current on all of the Android APIs, so doing one recipe per day before I start work is a great way for me to make sure I keep growing as a developer.

Even if you are a beginner, I'd highly recommend this book. The author has taken the time to make sure everything is explained and demonstrates each recipe with code samples, and screenshots to show you the expected result.

No matter your skill level, this book is a great way to learn how to accomplish new tasks in Android development, and learn alternative ways to accomplish tasks you already know. If you want to be a really good Android developer, buy this book.

It could have been great if the codes were updated.

This book could have been great except that much of the code does not and cannot work with the Android Studio. I have imported much of the code using Android Studio and some work great and others don't. For example, the code from the chapter 3 on ActionBar would not work even when I upgraded the API level.

I also thought the codes were generally outdated as chapters such as View Animations were hardly cutting edge.

If you are still using Eclipse and writing apps for older version of Android, maybe this book is still ideal. If you are looking for the latest Android 4.4 and above code that will work flawlessly with Android Studio, you will find this book frustrating.

Pros:
1)Comprehensive coverage of Android and what it can do.
2)Good explanations.

1)Where is the working code?
2)Where is the latest code that is compatible with the latest Android?

e-readers are the best...

I only buy from two publishers...Apress and McGraw. These books are the best in fullfilling your educational needs. I've been in the computer industry since 1972...yes, main frame days. I've been retired for ten years but am returning. These books are up to date and with the e-reader version I can haul around hundreds of books on my tablet and smartphone, synced...can't do that with hardcovers. Doing so allows me to have my library at my finger tips for quick reference, any time, any where.

You just can't get better than this...lol...that's what we said in 1981...but for now...enjoy.
