Flawless, by Lara Chapman

Sarah Burke is just about perfect. She's got killer blue eyes, gorgeous blond hair, and impeccable grades. There's just one tiny-all right, enormous-flaw: her nose. But even that's not so bad. Sarah's got the best best friend and big goals for print journalism fame.

On the first day of senior year, Rock Conway walks into her journalism class and, well, rocks her world. Problem is, her best friend, Kristen, falls for him too. And when Rock and Kristen stand together, it's like Barbie and Ken come to life. So when Kristen begs Sarah to help her nab Rock, Sarah does the only thing a best friend can do-she agrees. For someone so smart, what was she thinking?

This hip retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac is filled with hilariously misguided matchmaking, sweet romance, and a gentle reminder that we should all embrace our flaws.

Cute story!
By loves to read
Sarah has a flaw or does she? This is a cute retailing of Shakespeare's Roxanne. A coming of age story, how we perceive ourselves as to how others really see us. There were wonderful quotes at the beginning of each chapter here is one of my favorites: "I never saw an ugly thing in my life: for let the form of an object be what it may-light,shade, and perspective will always make it beautiful." by John Constable.
Sarah and her best friend Kristen start the new school year the same as always, except for gorgeous Rockford is the new amazing guy in their high school. Rock is handsome, smart, attentive, and fun. Well Sarah and Kristen both have a crush on Rock. Sarah has rarely fallen for a guy, while her best friend Kristen goes through guys fairly quickly. Once Kristen has her eye's set on something it is full steam ahead, and since Sarah thinks they look good together and she loves her best friend she agrees to Kristen's scheming to catch Rock. This story was fun and light, but at the same time delves into the topics of appearances and liking ourselves the way we are and not giving into the social acceptable perfect looks. So what her nose is a little big, but does her nose have to define everything about her? Does it make her ugly? Who defines ugly? The writing flowed smoothly, the characters were interesting. I enjoyed the best friend relationship, how they were there for each other. Sarah is smart, funny and witty, and self sacrificing almost to a fault. Kristen is the fluffy, beautiful best friend. A quick fun, light story, with a point.

fair amount of swearing
clean romance

Delightful and engaging
By ReadingVacation
We have all heard from adults that "It is what is on the inside that counts." If adults really wanted to get their message across, they would have their kids pick up Flawless. As Sarah struggles to accept her nose, she realizes that what she offers on the inside is even more important. I love stories that teach a lesson while they entertain. Win-Win.

Speaking of Sarah's nose, I can still not totally picture what it looks like. I settled for something that reminds me of a parrot nose, curvy and very big. Even though Sarah claims that she is okay with her nose, it is obvious that she is self-conscious. For all her bravo, she seems to see herself as only her nose, not the wonderfully unique person she really is. It's sad that Sarah even lacks the confidence to admit that she is uneasy with her nose.

If you think the story is loosely based on Cyrano de Bergerac, you are right. Remember, he's the guy with the big nose. I read the children's version of Cyrano, and I am thrilled with the modern twist in Flawless. If you read both books, you will know exactly what I am talking about. I am shocked that the girls are able to keep their charade going as long as they are.

Sarah's forbidden affection for Rock is classic. I learned just how special and tormenting love can be when you are being denied the ability to express your true feelings. Despite wishing that Sarah was with Rock, I could not work up any hatred for Kristen. She was oblivious to Sarah's feelings and she seemed to honestly like Rock for most of the book. Oh, and I don't even get me started on the dramatic romantic conclusion to this sweet story.

Lara Chapman's debut is delightful and engaging. I fell in love with every single page.

COVER COMMENTS

How cool is this cover? I like that Sarah's nose is missing so we are forced to picture it on our own. That makeup is just gorgeous. Look at those eyes!

A Modern Version of Cyrano De Bergerac
By Paula L. Phillips
OMG , I loved this book so much . I didn't think that it would have the effect on me that it did , I wasn't sure what the book was going to be about but once I got started I was hooked and then with the last few chapters and by the time I had finished the book , I actually had tears in my eyes and I HARDLY ever cry in books , movies I do but never really books and especially not in Teen books lol. But Flawless brought tears to my eyes.
The book starts with two best friends Sarah and Kristen and of course a new hunky guy named Rockford aka Rock Conway. He is not only gorgeous and handsome but he is also smart and intelligent and of course the perfect gentleman. When Kristen sets her eyes on him , Sarah always the best friend takes a step back though she liked him too. The next part reminded me of the book "The Julian Game" by Adele Griffin when Kristen asks Sarah to write to Rock pretending to be her , as this goes on though Sarah is finding herself fall more in love with Rock as he is definitely more perfect for her than Kristen. Throughout the novel Flawless , we read as Sarah continually questions the factor of Loyalty and how far one can go to remain loyal and when has loyalty gone too far that one loses it's own morals and self-worth. The other issue in which the title stems from is the fact that we learn Sarah has a big nose - a nose that is out of place on her face, one that is so big -people stop and stare. In Flawless , we read as Sarah tosses and turns with the issue of her appearance and self-esteem. This part of the book reminded me of "The North of Beautiful" by Justina Chen Hedley in which the main character had a port wine birthmark over the side of her face. In the last chapter we read as Sarah reads out an essay she wrote on Loyalty and the consequences of what she did are revealed.
Flawless is one of those books that I highly recommend all to read and even if it isn't the type of book that you normally read - you must.

Fallen Angels and the Origins of Evil: Why Church Fathers Suppressed The Book Of Enoch And Its Startling Revelations, by Elizabeth Clare P

Did rebel angels take on human bodies to fulfill their lust for the daughters of men? Did these fallen angels teach men to build weapons of war? That is the premise of the Book of Enoch, a text cherished by the Essenes, early Jews and Christians, but later condemned by both rabbis and church fathers. Elizabeth Clare Prophet examines the controversy surrounding this book and sheds new light on Enoch's forbidden mysteries. She demonstrates that Jesus and the apostles studied the book and tells why church fathers suppressed its teaching that angels could incarnate in human bodies. Contains all the Enoch texts, including the Book of Enoch, and biblical parallels to the Book of Enoch.

Worth the read
By Joel Brown
Did you ever wonder about the "sons of God" in the sixth chapter of Genesis? Well, it was a few lines summing up the book of Enoch, likely written prior to Genesis even. This book argues that Enoch is Scripture and also explains why that is so. But since as the cover reads the church fathers suppressed it, we don't find it in our Bibles today. But by drawing parallels to it and our Bible it concludes Jesus had thorough Enochian knowledge. Not only that, but that all the characters of biblical times knew of the Watchers' fall, and the adulteration of our race with Nephilim genetics. They also believe that there were 2 'falls' of the angels rather than one, as commonly thought of as result to Lucifer's fall. The first, out of pride, the Nephilim fell. Second, out of lust, did the Watchers. And as temptation befell the Watchers to incarnate male homo sapiens, the daughters of ancient man gave birth to giants, reputed to be 300 cubits tall by the books translation of Enoch. That also adds to this books value, it has the complete book of Enoch and the book of the secrets of Enoch, and excerpts from the book of Jubilees and the testaments of the twelve patriarchs. Last of all, the book has many illustrations of angel related scenes portrayed. Not a likely best seller, but a worthy read for those interested:)

This is not the space for comment on the author. Anyone wanting to know about Elizabeth Clare Prophet, her Church Universal Triumphant, and the Summit Lighthouse organization can very easily search for her own web pages on the net and form their own judgement.
One thing you will not find in this book is a cogent examination of 'Why church fathers supressed the book of Enoch'. To write on such a subject one would have to know something about the formation of the Hebrew canon - an area in which Ms. Prophet clearly has not even taken the trouble to read the standard texts (such as Leiman, Wurthwein and Tov), and then on patristics (where R.H. Charles gives a decent summary of Origen, Jerome and other fathers' views on Enoch).
However, on the positive side, for those who are looking for a copy of the Book of Enoch, some alternative suggestions:
If you are looking for a general read about all the various traditions about the Enoch mentioned in Genesis and then taken up by various Jewish, Christian and Muslim writers since, the book for you is probably 'Enoch A Man for All Generations' by the eminent professor James Vanderkam, chairman of the Society for Biblical Literature.
If you are looking for a scholarly and accurate translation of the original text of Book of Enoch as quoted in Jude 14, then the book for you is either the 1912 translation by R.H. Charles published (still) by SPCK, or the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha Volume 1 ed. J.H. Charlesworth, and published by Doubleday 1983. Avoid the elderly 1821 translation by Rev. Richard Laurence if possible. If the SPCK version is out of print, there seem to be various 'reproduction' copies available from American New Age publishing houses.
If you are looking for what the NT writers thought of the so-called 'Book of Enoch' read Luke 20:35-36, Titus 1:14, Heb 1:14, 2Pe. 2:16-20,3:3,3:10-12, Jude 8, and compare Jude 14 with 1En1:9 and Deut 33:2. (But you might still need a copy of Enoch to understand what Peter and Jude were getting so upset about).
If you are looking for sensationalist stories about fallen angels then you probably will get more out of the vampire fiction of Anne Rice...

Suppressed Scripture and Ancient Knowledge
By Kate 'DarkIrishEyes' Connor
Fallen Angels and the Origins of Evil is an immaculately well researched book detailing not only how evil came into this world, but also how Church Fathers in early Christianity set out to destroy the Book of Enoch and its teachings. This was despite the fact that Enoch's ancient scripture had been revered by the biblical patriarchs throughout the Holy Land for hundreds of years. Even today the Vatican considers the Book of Enoch to be heretical and it is not included in the Bible.

For those persons who are unfamiliar with the Book of Enoch, it is one of the earliest scriptures ever writen which describes how 'son's of God', or fallen angels, rebelled against God and took 'daughters of men' to be their wives on Earth, as outlined in Genesis 6. It also has many other detailed teachings including, who first taught mankind how to build and use weapons of war, and also the prophesy of God's Final Judgement.

Elizabeth Prophet's splendid book is one of the most important books ever written about Enoch's scripture. It is a wonderful buy and contains many sections including, the entire Book of Enoch, Concealed Biblical References to the Watchers (and Nephilim) and also Biblical Parallels to the Book of Enoch which show exactly how these fallen angels have been "from the beginning the spoilers of the dreams of God and man".

If your interest in suppressed scripture and early Christianity was sparked by reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, then you will love this book. It is a compelling body of work and a must have for anyone who wants to learn about the true origins of evil and its continued existence into present day 'civilization'. The conclusions this book offers are both shocking and controversial and are perhaps more important today than ever before.

Very Articulate
By Ekman Fan
Normally, I don't write reviews. A previous reviewer received a terrible copy of this book, most likely from a reseller. After balking on the purchase of this book, I finally broke down and, despite the negative review, purchased a new copy through Amazon. I'm glad I did!

As an adult learner going back to school (full-time), my anxieties are extremely high. New Beginnings offers a variety of ways to explain present day academia, college culture, classroom etiquette and suggestions to make the most of your study time. The chapters listed are:

1) Becoming a Student
2) Assessing Learning Needs and Course Requirements
3) Identifying College Resources
4) Strategies for Managing Time & Stress
5) Developing Note-Taking, Studying & Test-Taking Skills
6) Strategies for Reading
7) Strategies for Research
8) Strategies for Writing
9) Grammar Brush up
10) Math Brush-up, and
11) Financing your Education

In the past, I have taken on-line courses through an accredited university. All of my course's syllabi depicted course requirements (i.e. research paper) and outlined the professor's expectations. This text provides explanations of formulating a research question; primary & secondary sources; ways to find verifiable documentation; writing styles, etc.

The book is extremely comprehensive and well worth buying. I give five stars to the author with my appreciation!

Update 2014: This book certainly helped me. I graduated with a 3.66 GPA, soon to attend graduate school. The suggestions relating to organization are invaluable! I intend to keep using the same suggestions on this next journey.

Thanks for letting me share.

Banvard's Folly: Thirteen Tales of Renowned Obscurity, Famous Anonymity, and Rotten Luck, by Paul Collins

The historical record crowns success. Those enshrined in its annals are men and women whose ideas, accomplishments, or personalities have dominated, endured, and most important of all, found champions. John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage, Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Artists, and Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets are classic celebrations of the greatest, the brightest, the eternally constellated.

Paul Collins' Banvard's Folly is a different kind of book. Here are thirteen unforgettable portraits of forgotten people: men and women who might have claimed their share of renown but who, whether from ill timing, skullduggery, monomania, the tinge of madness, or plain bad luck--or perhaps some combination of them all--leapt straight from life into thankless obscurity. Among their number are scientists, artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and adventurers, from across the centuries and around the world. They hold in common the silenced aftermath of failure, the name that rings no bells.

Collins brings them back to glorious life. John Banvard was an artist whose colossal panoramic canvasses (one behemoth depiction of the entire eastern shore of the Mississippi River was simply known as "The Three Mile Painting") made him the richest and most famous artist of his day. . . before he decided to go head to head with P. T. Barnum. Ren Blondot was a distinguished French physicist whose celebrated discovery of a new form of radiation, called the N-Ray, went terribly awry. At the tender age of seventeen, William Henry Ireland signed "William Shakespeare" to a book and launched a short but meteoric career as a forger of undiscovered works by the Bard -- until he pushed his luck too far. John Symmes, a hero of the War of 1812, nearly succeeded in convincing Congress to fund an expedition to the North Pole, where he intended to prove his theory that the earth was hollow and ripe for exploitation; his quixotic quest counted Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe among its greatest admirers.

Collins' love for what he calls the "forgotten ephemera of genius" give his portraits of these figures and the other nine men and women in Banvard's Folly sympathetic depth and poignant relevance. Their effect is not to make us sneer or p0revel in schadenfreude; here are no cautionary tales. Rather, here are brief introductions-acts of excavation and reclamation-to people whom history may have forgotten, but whom now we cannot.

From The New Yorker
Thirteen wry biographical essays about people, once famous, who have disappeared from memory. In 1903, the French physicist Ren Blondlot was so eager to follow up the recent discovery of X-rays that he discovered N-rays, which do not exist. In the eighteen-forties, the American painter John Banvard gained international celebrity for his painting of the Mississippi River—a panorama which measured over fifteen thousand square feet. And in the seventeen-nineties, when England was suffering a fit of bardolatry, a London lawyer's clerk, William Henry Ireland, began "finding" Shakespeare documents. After these forgeries became collectors' items as forgeries, Ireland met the demand by making forgeries of his forgeries, and every line from his pen remains extremely valuable.

Review

“No writer better articulates our interest in the confluence of hope, eccentricity, and the timelessness of the bold and strange than Paul Collins. [This book is] sublimely odd, frequently funny, and better yet, thrillingly factual.” ―Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

“Though the most profound question is 'What is the meaning of life?' the most human question 'Don't they know how special I am?' Paul Collins knows. Thanks to these fascinating tales, his forgotten attention-seekers must be rolling over in their graves, if only to finally bask in the limelight.” ―Sarah Vowell, author of Take the Cannoli

“Collins's swift, humorous prose makes for satisfying schadenfreude.” ―Time Out New York

“[A] lively treatise on eccentricity, flawed genius, and star-crossed obsession.” ―The Washington Times

“An unqualified success.” ―The Seattle Times

“A remarkably lucid and entertaining peek into the admittedly strange lives of the characters [Collins] has unearthed . . . A witty meditation on the vagaries of fame and the human drive for validation.” ―Tucson Weekly

“With crisp prose and engaging storytelling, Collins contemplates the whims of fortune and the foolhardiness of humanity.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Hearteningly strange . . . Stretching the bounds of nonfiction's propensity for weirdness, Collins exhumes little-known figures [and] recounts their perversely inspiring battles against the more logical ways of the world.” ―The Onion

“The thirteen lives and times to which Collins devotes his considerable scholarship and manifest narrative gifts in Banvard's Folly are the flash-in-the-pan, briefly notable, and long-ignored ones-of-a-kind, who remind us of the nobility and futility, the grandeur and begrudgery of our endeavors. Of Collins's endeavor, however, we can proclaim our permanent thanks and amazement and heartiest welcome.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review

A Walk Through A History of What Might Have Been
By D. W. Casey
This is a great book. A current trend in popular history is to write histories of great people who achieved success but who are not household names (consider the book "Longitude"); Paul Collins turns this idea on its head by writing the stories of 13 people whose ideas, frankly, did not have a lot of merit, but who were famous in their day.
The title story, Banvard's Folly, tells the tale of the artist John Banvard -- world famous in the 1850s, but utterly forgotten today, whose great moving panorama of the Mississippi River made him rich, but who ultimately was destroyed competing with P.T. Barnum.
Other stories include "The Man With N-Ray Eyes", which relates how a French scientist believes erroneously that he has found a new source of radiation; "A.J. Pleasonton's Blue Light Special", which discusses the 1870s fad concerning the healing properties of light reflected through blue glass, and numerous others, including the story of a Shakepeare forger, a woman's quest to prove Shakespeare's works were written by Francis Bacon and others, and the development of the pneumatic train.
The book is a little sad, because each of the characters really believes in their ideas, even though they are rejected by society. But instead of a happy ending, these stories all end badly for the protagonists -- they end up mocked and forgotten.
The book is remarkable for its scholarship -- researching the forgotten intellectual and cultural history of a previous century is no easy task; but Mr. Collins brings the reader back into the culture of the times easily. The stories are entertaining and very amusing.

One of the best books of 2001
By Jeff Topham
Banvards Folly is a lovingly-researched tribute to the forgotten, the mistaken, and the discredited. The book profiles 13 historical figures, many of whom were among the most well-known figures of their day. Each, however, pursued his or her genius to a historical dead end, and their reputations and achievements have long since vanished into obscurity. Although each of these profiles is ultimately a study in failure, these ill-fated individuals demonstrate a brilliance, eccentricity, or audacity that is often breathtaking. Collins subjects may be failures, but they are spectacular failures, visionaries and dreamers who failed with an astounding degree of ambition, style, and verve. Exceptional.

A Sypathetic Retelling of Tales of Failure
By W. C HALL
"Banvard's Folly" is a wonderful book, thanks to the talents of author Paul Collins. As you have probably gathered by now from other write-ups, this book tells the story of 13 people, once prominent, and now largely forgotten. They each earned inclusion in this book because of a grand failure of some sort. In other hands, this material could have been a tool for ridicule; but Collins strikes just the right tone here. While not forgiving his subjects' excesses or blind spots, he manages to tell their stories with a real sense of empathy. It's obvious that a lot of research went into this volume, but Collins never overpowers the reader with it; each chapter just seems to glide along. If history's lesser lights are of interest to you, you should enjoy this.
