A good start

There are preciously few translations into English from non-English markets. As I know first hand what is released on Polish and Russian markets, and have some info on Japanese, I can tell you that English market is missing some really, really top class authors. The Dedalus series is an interesting project, unfortunately its emphasis is a bit too much on history for my tastes - I don't find the 19th century literature to par with today's, and as with any short stories collection, this is a mixed bag, you are likely to find some stories not to your tastes. And one more complain - the title sais fantasy, but there are no stories by any of the three best Polish modern fantasy authors (Sapkowski, Kres, Ziemianski), while quite a few are more sf like.

But don't get me wrong. I gave this book 4 stars and I mean it. The DB of Polish fantasy is definetly worth buying. Quite a few of the stories are excellent quality, and for one of them I'd buy the book even if it was the only one it it - I am speaking of Dukaj's 'Golden Gallery'. Dukaj, whom I consider to be not only the best sf Polish author, but the best sf worldwide author ever, has debuted some 15 years ago with this story - and it is just a taste of things he has written later. 'Golden Gallery' is stunning, and a must read.

Keeping fingers crossed more translations will start flowing into the English market...I'd love to read some of the great French, German, Japanese, Czech, Hungarian and others stories my friends tell me about...

I bought this book as I was heading out of the country and wanted to try reading literature from authors I'd never heard of before. The genre is "fantasy," so I suppose I was expecting something akin to what us Westerners consider to be fantasy, but I was definitely wrong. Most of the stories in the collection revolve around the authors' Catholic faith: demons, heaven, hell, purgatory, faith, and so on. Several of the stories are very similar to fairy tales, though while traditional fairy tales tend to leave out names and places, these include both. One particularly fantastic story examines the idea of purgatory using fascist imagery, and believe it or not, the "fascists" (God and his angels) don't actually come off as the bad guys.

It's an absolutely fabulous read. The other reviewer for the book mentions that Sapkowski is nowhere to be found, and that's the primary reason why I gave this book four stars: Andrzej Sapkowski is widely considered to be Poland's greatest author, let alone fantasy author, and to have no stories by him in this collection is a serious oversight. Regardless, if you're at all interested in fantasy or fantastic stories written from a fantastic perspective, you need to get this book, period.

Atlantis Unmasked by Alyssa Day

Three and half stars for "Atlantis Unmasked" by Alyssa Day. If every series has a 'stumble', then for me this book is it. I didn't 'feel' the connection between the main characters and the writing felt choppy instead of the smooth flow I'm used to from this author. I didn't hate it by any means, but I was expecting much more.

Grace is a leader of the human rebellion against the vampires and their allies and has been ever since her brother was killed by a pack of vamps celebrating their 'coming out'. She uses the gift of perfect aim she received from the goddess Diana's blood passed through her family. She's closed herself off from everything but vengence and just wants to take out as many vamps as she can before she dies fighting. The warrior Alexios disturbs her. He's the only man who shakes her composure and makes her 'feel'. But he's an Alpha male all the way and Grace won't stand for anyone trying to protect her and her goddess may not either!

Alexios is scarred, physically and mentally. Tortured as a plaything by the goddess Anubis, her minions scarred his face with hellfire. He's drawn so powerfully to Grace, but fears opening himself up to the pain of love and loss. Now the Fae have appeared on the scene and that's never, ever, ever a good thing. Alexios has been tasked to work with Grace and steal the Vampire's Bane from the possession of the most powerful vampire yet.

I can't even write a smooth review for this one. It feels disjointed. I'll just blame it on the appearance of the Fae. Will that work? I'm guessing Day is expanding the scope of the plotline as there seemed to be a bit of 'empire building' present to include new characters, new allies, and possibly new enemies. I'm hoping that's the case and in any event, every series has a 'lag book' and this one's it for me so far.

Alexios is still yummy, but Grace never quite felt right to me. Toward the end, she changed quite a bit which made her better for Alexios but struck me as a kind of cheat. Ah well, maybe it's just me. I still intend to keep reading this series and the next book is "Atlantis Redeemed" sked to release in Feb 2010.

The Hunter and the Warrior...

Alexios was once a gorgeous, golden hunk along with his fellow warriors. That is, until the evil goddess Anubisa captured him (she really likes messing with Atlanteans). She and her blood pride mutilated him and burned him with their hellfire scarring not only his body, but also his soul. Even after his escape, he remains aloof and hides his scar under his hair.

Grace is a leader of one of the rebel factions that fight alongside Quinn's Resistance fighters. Grace has been fighting since her brother's murder at the hands of vampires several years ago. She herself is an elite warrior because she is a direct female descendent of Diana (the Goddess of the Hunt). Her aim is never off and much prefers her bow and a quiver of arrows as her weapon of choice and she can definitely hold her own alongside the scarred warrior that she is attracted to.

Alexios and Grace are thrown together to retrieve The Vampire's Bane, a yellow diamond with the power to destroy vamps from Poseidon's Trident that has the ability to control minds. Throw in some meddling from Fae royalty (always trouble with a capital T), goddess intervention, and an Atlantean warrior learning to trust and love again and you have a fantastic read. Definitely recommend reading these in order, that way sub characters, and storylines make a little more sense!

First of all, this is by far my favorite cover art of all the published books so far. On the plus side, the author did change things up a little in that the naughty bits were not the same repetitive descriptions that they were in the previous three/five books. But on the down side, the para-normals are getting way too numerous to keep track off. There's the vampires, werewolves, witches, other shape shifters (panther, tiger, bear, raptor), empaths, gem singers, object readers, descendants of Diana (Goddess of the Hunt)....and I feel like I'm forgetting a couple (truth tellers, elves). Seriously, who can keep track with the way the series is spinning out of control? Less War Against Humanity, more search for the lost gems of Poseidon's Trident please and life on Atlantis! That's the only reason I'll keep reading the books.

Although the broad outline is the same as The Five Chinese Brothers by Claire Huchet Bishop, illustrated by Kurt Wiese (first published in 1938), Mahy's stirring retelling is very different from and just as good as the earlier effort. She has elaborated on the story, spicing it with more action and adding ironic humor. Replete with striking character portraits, the Tsengs' dramatic watercolors evoke the Orient and provide authentic, historical details. As in all fine picture books, text and illustrations blend, creating an inviting world for young readers and listeners and heightening the story's dramatic impact. Children will be caught up in the many narrow escapes and will benefit from the subtle lesson on the importance of working together. Ages 4-8.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-- The seven brothers walk, talk, and look alike, but each has his own special power. When the third brother runs afoul of the emperor and is sentenced to be beheaded, the fourth brother, who has bones of iron, takes his place. The emperor then tries drowning and burning but each time a different brother foils his scheme. Mahy retells this traditional Chinese tale in graceful, witty prose. She uses classic storytelling elements to their best advantage and, without any attempt to imitate Chinese syntax, her choice of words gives a feeling of time and place. Both jacket notes and an editor's foreword give background information about the tale. Beginning with the cover, which shows the smiling brothers looming over a cowering emperor, the Tsengs' rich watercolors complement and enhance the story. With great skill, they interweave elements of ancient Chinese painting with lively pictorial storytelling. The emperor, encased in voluminous ceremonial robes, is an embodiment of corrupt yet insecure power, and the beautiful faces of the seven brothers, although alike, glow with life. Many readers will be familiar with the classic Claire Bishop/Kurt Wiese version of the The Five Chinese Brothers (Coward-McCann, 1938). About the Author
Margaret Mahy (1936-2012) worked as a librarian in her native New Zealand before becoming a full-time writer in 1980. Beloved by generations of readers, she wrote over 150 books for children and young adults, and in 2006, she received the Hans Christian Andersen Award (the "Nobel Prize of children's books") for her contribution to children's literature.

Still a fun story to read after all these years

This was my favorite book when I was in the 3rd grade. I bought it for my 8 year old grandson who is starting the 3rd grade. After it arrived, we read it together and I think it is now at least one of his favorite children book too. It gave me the same feelings I got when I read it for the first time many years ago.

Avoids the stereotypes of the earlier version

I won't spend my time discussing the storyline, since most readers will be familiar with it.
This book is better than the earlier version of "Seven Chinese Brothers" I grew up with, yet it lack that book's superior pacing and melodic flow.
But still, this book is the better one in that it is conscious of the stereotypes permeating throughout the earlier version and thus eliminates them.
The ending could have been stronger since it seems to end hanging in mid-air.
The illustrations are superior to the previous version with an Asian-influenced use of watercolor.
The main problem is that, overall, the book doesn't disappoint, yet nor does it impress. A solid, somewhat lackluster book.
