Excellent for the Physics C AP test

I bought several AP Physics books to supplement my daughter's physics class at school. After buying 4 AP guides, 2 textbooks, looking up the openly available free response questions for the last 7 years,and the available multiple choice questions, I found this book to be the best guide for the Physics C exam.

The author does an excellent job of presenting the material in a way that is very similar to the material available from prior actual tests.

There is no doubt that the author's strength is in the calculus based approach to the exam (which after all is what the Physics C exam is supposed to be about). His methods are clearly presented and easily understood. Importantly, he doesn't overly focus on the mathematics by presenting every possible physics - calculus connection. Just the ones that you need to know.

The physics concepts themselves are also well done. The problems are quite clever but yet test the simple concepts of physics well. My impression is that the actual test is similar in this regard. In essence the format is (a) do you know the concept that is being tested?, (b) can you efficiently solve the problem in one, two, or three steps? The author is able to reproduce this format. My last piece of advice is to avoid the fairly basic guides claiming to cover both the Physics B and C exams, as they are good for the Physics B but NOT for the Physics C exam. This is book is far superior (see my other reviews).

Physics C is a great review

This is a great review for the AP Physics student! Mooney does a great job condensing the material tested in the Physics C exam in both the Mechanical and E&M areas and provides great examples to drive home the concepts. I would suggest this book to any student as a supplement to their classroom textbooks.

Great book for self-pedagogy, given a conceptual background in physics

I took the AP Physics B class as a junior in high school and got a 5 on the exam. I also got an 800 on the SAT2 in physics. I planned on going to college to study a field of engineering, which would require calculus-based physics. However, my high school did not have a course in physics C, and I wanted to place out of the introductory mechanics and E&M courses at my university. I therefore decided to self-study for the Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: E&M exams.

This prep book is the reason I got 5s on both of those exams despite not having taken a class in calculus-based physics. Its explanations are clear, and it has practice problems that closely resemble the conceptual nature of the multiple choice section of the AP exams. This is something that a lot of prep books miss out on. (It, of course, has good free response practice, which most prep books hit well.)

If I was able to teach myself the content of these exams via this prep book, you will be able to reinforce a full-year class via this prep book.

Not a big fan,but the journal is average.

I,apparently mistakenly,believed the Intention and Change journal would have a little-okay a lot-more structure. I feel more guidance,for me,would be useful. I anticipated a specific topic to focus on daily and this is not the format.

However,the journal affords ideas in case the writer gets "stuck." Also,it is filled with uplifting,thought provoking quotes and wisdom. The somewhat unstructured format affords a great opportunity for freedom,creativity and exploration.

From the Author
I wrote Canned and Crushed for some of my favorite students who claimed they couldn't find any books they liked to read. While the book was being edited their current classroom teacher read them the chapters, printed on plain paper, but she didn't tell them who wrote the book. One day she told them that the author was coming to visit to read the final chapter and answer questions. When I walked in the room, they invited me to stay and meet the special author. Were they ever surprised to find out I was the special author! They presented me with ideas for the cover and title. And they continue to tell me they love the book when I visit and ask me questions about what Sandro, the main character, is doing today and if his sister is still okay, as if the characters in the book are real people. I love that. I want to write books that show kids how important they are and that just one kid can make the world a better place. My next book deals with the friendship of two boys in 1919 in Chicago. It's historical fiction and will be released next spring. A group of fifth graders read and reacted to the book while I was editing it. They gave it a thumbs up, and I hope you will too!

Great read! Sandro holds a lot of responsibility on ...

Great read! Sandro holds a lot of responsibility on his shoulders when his sister gets sick and has to go for surgery in Mexico and Dad is working a few jobs. Such is the story for many of the kids in our school district. Bibi does a great job nailing the details to make this such an authentic read. Sandro is humorous and talks to the reader as he narrates.

Great book! The character gets in so much trouble ...

Great book! The character gets in so much trouble that is real and heart-warming because his intentions are so good. But he's not perfect--just like most kids. The lessons in this book are wonderful. And it's funny, too, with a great fast pace. I was really rooting for this Hispanic boy and his family. This is the type of book that might encourage good conversations with parents and classmates. I loved how the author brought in good math problems and interesting words for kids to learn in an organic way within the story. I highly recommend this book for middle-grade readers and adults who also love middle-grade adventures.

Belford presents readers with an opportunity for discussion, learning and enjoyment.

A book that feels like a walk through a middle-grade school hallway, Bibi Belford has managed to capture the language of middle-schoolers while presenting a character that is often difficult to like, even as you are exposed to more of his life away from school.

Sandro Zapote is a kid in a difficult situation: his father is in the US without papers, and his little sister has a heart condition that requires treatment that is far more expensive than his family can afford. The family’s living situation gets worse when his mother and sister head to Mexico so Girasol can get treatment, leaving Sandro and his father back in the states. Worry about his sister, a solid and often single-minded determination to help his family, and Sandro’s own sense of ‘justice’ in dealing with those who wrong him give this book an all too plausible feel, while introducing issues that are difficult and controversial for adults, let alone children.

Belford uses Sandro’s desires to do good with his often and frequent moments of bad behavior, tying it back to his desires to ‘do for’ his family when not everything works out quite as he would plan. Simple childish reactions of jealousy, mischief and small vandalisms will be easy for children to understand, and they will most probably ‘side with’ Sandro in some of his actions gone horridly wrong. Underneath the mischief and mistakes is a child desperate to help his family but wholly without the real skills or options to do so.

With a few twists and unexpected help from surprise places, wonderfully rich characters and prose that feels honest and real while still presenting issues that are far more adult than one would expect in a story for children, Belford presents readers with an opportunity for discussion, learning and enjoyment.

Great Biography Of A Great Man

MJ. His Airness. Jordan Air. Michael Jordan is arguably, the best basketball player that has ever laced up his shoes. Fans all have favorite memories; his game-winning basket for the national title at UNC, the flu game, the jams, the high scores. He is one of the most easily identifiable individuals in the world as his fame spread past the courts to advertising and the movies. But who is this man?

Roland Lazenby has written a memoir biography of Michael Jordan. He takes the reader through his childhood and the family structure and issues. Jordan's time at the University of North Carolina and his relationship with coach Dean Smith is covered in depth as the reader learns how Jordan improved his game. His time with the Chicago Bulls led to a long run as world champions and the reader sees how the offense set up there was perfect for Jordan both to shine as an individual and as a teammate. His relationship with his teammates and his coaches is covered in detail, both during the good years and as the team came apart through player-management issues.

But this is not just a tribute book. Jordan's negative influences are also covered. The family issues and conflicts were a spur to Jordan. His competitive drive also led to gambling. Of course, few can forget the murder of his father and how that affected Jordan, leading to him leaving basketball for two years and trying to become a professional baseball player. The fact that Jordan's intense competitive drive made him less than supportive of teammates that weren't as talented or who didn't work as hard. Jordan was a master trash-talker and rode others mercilessly when they didn't measure up to his standards.

At the end of the book, the reader is left with a complete picture of this complicated man. Leaders are honored and adored, but few really understand the drive it takes to be the best. To spur others to achieve greatness, often leaders are less than kind and often even cruel, and that is also a part of leadership. Jordan has great athletic talent, an incredible energy and drive for success, loyalty to those he trusts, and has given the world moments that will always be remembered. At our core, we all want 'to be like Mike'. This book is recommended for sports fans and those interested in reading about how one individual finds the drive to compete and excel, until they are the best in the world.

I was a kid of the 90s, the Jordan generation and spent countless hours pounding a basketball in my backyard, terrorizing my parents with constant thuds as I executed passes to myself off the house walls before driving to my hoop, red, over-sized Bulls jersey worn constantly, emblazoned predictably with the iconic '23'. Jordan brings back memories of school holidays, carefree times and childhood innocence.

That's why going back and reading this comprehensive Jordan biography as an adult was both refreshing and insightful, even though it is difficult to find a more exposed or covered sports star in our time. What more could there possibly be to say? But that I think is the beauty of this book - it doesn't have any earth shattering revelations, or new exclusive, but it is comprehensive and brings all the stories together in one.

It meant that I could revisit Jordan's history, learn about the formative years before he was the global megastar (and while I was just a toddler on the other side of the world) and contextualize his accomplishments. In particular it gives great insight into the mythical tale of the high school coach who "dropped Jordan from his team" (so much more complex than it gets presented as and in fact that coach had a huge influence on Jordan and great relationship).

As a fan it's easy to look back on the six championships of the Bulls era and assume they were a highly performing, high achieving team celebrating each others success. They were in fact almost dysfunctional and at each other constantly. But it was that competitiveness, that feeling of being slighted that drove Jordan and in turn made Jordan challenge and push his teammates.

It's a wonderful insight into the personality of someone extraordinary. Jordan is regularly described as a difficult teammate, someone who couldn't understand people accepting less than the best or not working as hard as possible, someone who put in more time and effort than seemed sustainable, had no tolerance for fools and could generally be rude, introverted, untrusting and mercenary in dealing with people to get what he wanted. I could not help thinking afterwards the similarity in personality between Jordan and revered business figures of our time - Jobs, Bezos, Musk - who all demonstrate an almost identical personality.

It's certainly not all rosy - the gambling, the messy family situation, etc - but I think this is what makes it an even more important read for people like me who grew up with Jordan and still revere him as the greatest of all time.

In summary, I would say that I started the booking thinking whether I really need to invest in almost 700 pages of Jordan history but it didn't take long to develop into a compelling read and one that helped fill in a number of blanks beyond the mainstream memories of a generation and round out the story.

Very well researched but most info was nothing new to me.

Well researched. Very erudite in regards to some of the details concerning Michael Jordan's life. That alone merits 3 stars. The information about Michael's ancestors were brilliantly researched. The author also shed light on Jordan's Wizards years and presented information I didn't know about in regards to the rancor and in some cases odium that existed between Jordan and management as well as the growing dichotomy regarding philosophy and how the franchise should go foward. The players also grew to detest Jordan's approach. I respect the fact that Roland did not approach this book as another Jordan worshipping author who is going to write this hagiography painting Jordan as an infalible saint. Unfortunately for me having played the game during the late 80's and 90's in highschool and some college and watching a lot of MJ along with Magic and Bird, there wasn't much new information presented, at least for me. It was a decent read which for the neophyte who doesn't know that much about Jordan would be an astonishing narrative but for me I give it 4 stars not 5 simply because most of the information I already knew.

The problem with writing about these very famous personalities is that what don't we not know about the subject. It would be like writing a book about Michael Jackson and we can make the case that in the 90's Michael Jordan approached Michael Jackson status in terms of being that famous, especially the Michael Jackson of the 80's. Both figures transcended race and were famous international figures. What new information could you really present on the life of a person that famous. What hasn't been written about them somewhere. I would probably love to see a researcher go deeper into maybe the period of Jordan's life from 1993 to his comeback in 1995. Delving into the death of his father which to me is still clouded and strange. I think books like that would be an interesting and fresh take on this very famous subject. The 30 for 30 film "Jordan Ride's The Bus" touched on that period along with Bob Greene who is a famous Jordan historian and author but once again Greene is one of those hagiographers and Jordan worshipers. Roland in contrast stated that Jordan wanted to be involved but Roland wanted to keep the integrity of the book. Jordan wanted to ommit some things that were controversial to him. Jordan most likely would have opted to ommit the narrative about the sexual abuse that occured at the hands of his father as he victimized his older sister. He would have probably put the pressure on Roland to leave out the legal misgivings and lack of business accumen exhibited by his father as well. I do wonder why Roland failed to bring out the extortion trial in which Jordan was a plantiff in the 2002 case where one of his former mistresses Karla Knafel tried to blackmail him for money by threatening to exspose him as someone who was cheating on his wife in 1991 and who was potentially the father on her child. Overall pretty decent well researched narrative.

I love this calendar.

I follow Doug the Pug on Instagram and I thought he was so cute, that I had to get this calendar. I also have his T-Shirt haha.

Anyway, I love that the first section has the last six months of the year with enough space in the days to write appointments, etc. I'm looking forward to January when I can see the big pictures!

Gregory O. Gagnon (Chippewa) was the academic vice president and faculty member at Oglala Lakota College for almost seventeen years and continues to consult with two Sioux and two Chippewa tribal colleges. He is currently a research associate in history at Loyola University and a visiting professor of integrated studies at the University of North Dakota. Gagnon is the author of Fiduciary for Seven Generations: The Tribal College Trustee and coauthor of Native Peoples of the Northern Plains.

Not a complete solutions manual

This manual only has answers to certain problems in the book. I purchased this book hoping to have a complete solutions manual but was disappointed. It only has odd numbered problems (which can be found in the back in the book) and has a bit more detail with explanations.

Good, and Not So Good

This book can be a real help when working through difficult concepts. The down side is that it's really expensive for what it is. We're talking $50 or $60 which seems like extortion because the students who buy these things are the ones really struggling and need the help the most.

If you are struggling with your course, consider this book AFTER you've exhausted Google and one of the many Schaum's guides. You do have to learn the stuff for your test, and I found that those two methods are cheaper and provide better results.

Good Help Book

The book doesn't ever come close to helping with all the problems in the textbook. But, the problems it does have are explained very well. If you are just looking for just answers the back of your textbook covers all the odd problems which are more than you'll find in this book.
