About the Author
Peter De Jong, Ph.D., is a professor of social work at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has been an outpatient therapist, case worker, and led trainings and consultations with mental health clinics, family service agencies, juvenile corrections programs, and schools. In addition to co-authoring (with Insoo Kim Berg) two earlier editions of INTERVIEWING FOR SOLUTIONS, he has written several articles and book chapters on solution-focused therapy. Peter continues to develop new practice tools and therapy and training manuals, and to conduct research on practice and how new practitioners acquire a solution-focused outlook and skills.
Insoo Kim Berg, M.S.S.W. is a co-developer of the solution-focused approach and is the director of the Brief Family Therapy Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Many of her 10 books and over 35 papers have been translated into 14 languages. Among her books are FAMILY BASED SERVICES, WORKING WITH THE PROBLEM DRINKER (co-author Scott D. Miller), BUILDING SOLUTIONS IN CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (co-author Susan Kelly), and CHILDREN'S SOLUTION WORK (co-author Therese Steiner). Insoo lectures across North America, Europe, Scandinavia, and Pacific Rim countries and consults with organizations and various government agencies.

Excellent introduction to SFBT

I am currently taking a Solution-Focused Brief Therapy class, and this book is a required text.
It is easy to read and has a lot of examples of actual interviews with clients.
Breaks down individual SFBT techniques (Miracle Question, Exceptions, Goaling, Scaling, etc.) and shows why, when and how to use these techniques. Sample interview outlines are also provided for the beginner SFBT therapist.
I recommend this text for all future practitioners, as many of the strengths-based, client-centered techniques can be incorporated into any therapeutic approach or theory.

The most helpful counseling book I have ever read.

This was by far the most influential book I ever read in grad school. It was a required text for my Brief Therapy class and solidified my choosing to adopt solution-focused therapy as my theory of choice. It was very easy to read, had a lot of details and examples, and greatly helped me in learning to practice counseling. I would definitely suggest this book to anyone interested in learning solution-focused therapy.

BRILLIANT

This seminal introductory volume to SFBT (Solution Focused Brief Therapy) is an excellent primer to the thinking involved with this extremely effective technique. Every therapist could benefit from incorporating this way of thinking and working with clients into their practice. Cannot say enough good things about this book.
