One of the first books my kids will be learning from. Coding is going to be their second language if they will like it.

The first lesson I learned with this book, and I think it's the most important. The lesson is that from now on, whenever I will be learning something.
I will take it from the kindergarten level regardless if I already have basic knowledge of the subject or not.
It is one of the best books I read, I know :)

Cannot be read with the Kindle For PC app

Prospective purchasers of the Kindle version of this book should be aware that it cannot be read using the Kindle For PC app! So you cannot read it on a laptop alongside your child. Only after making the purchase are you confronted with a message saying "The item is not compatible with this device" if you attempt to open it with the Kindle For PC app.

Having fun with Coding

How many conversations have you had about how much time the kids are spending on their electronics? In our case, too many conversations. When it was time for some gift giving, chose to follow the adage, “if you can’t beat them, join them.” This join came in the form of a book … how to create your own computer games.
Computer Coding Games for Kids incorporates what I have come to expect from DK published books:
• bright, engaging colors
• thick, tough paper
• short, stand-alone paragraphs of text interspersed with graphics and helpful visuals
• Useful, but non-essential information presented in stand-alone text boxes.
After just two sessions, I was hearing, “This is so fun,” “Never thought that it would be so easy to create games,” and “I can’t wait to tell Mr. XXX (school technology teacher) what I have done.”
What I find so brilliant in their layout is the modular development. The simplest game requires nine stages to build. After nearly every stage, the book encourages the reader to play the game and try out the newly added feature. For some, this playing will be simple error checking to confirm that it is doing what is expected. For others it could be three to twelve minutes of play before moving on. For kids (and adults) with short attention spans, this is brilliant. There is time to play, there is time to break away from “the work,” and there are so many opportunities to feel proud of what has been accomplished.
The book includes eight distinctively different games to create. Each game design chapter ends with a two-page spread of “Hacks and Tweaks” offering ideas on how to modify and extend the game. The first game–Star Hunter” includes the following stages:
• Create the player. Stop and test it out (i.e., play with it)
• Set the background scene
• Add sound effects. Test play
• Add the enemy. Test play
• Add collision logic. Test play
• Add more enemies. Test play
• Collect stars (i.e., points). Test play
• Keep score. Test play
• Better enemies. Test play
While I found this book brilliantly put-together, it is a book that required a fair amount of parent involvement. Older child picked up the book and proceeded to create one of the medium complex games. When it did not work properly, came back the next day and debugged it. Process for the younger child was a bit different:
1. Mom downloaded Scratch from scratch.mit.edu/scratch2download. Unlike so many other downloads suggested in printed books, this download proceeded smoothly.
2. Mom created the first game (while kids were nowhere to be found).
3. Mom played game and had a bit of fun, and then…deleted the game. So much of the fun and pride comes from building yourself, after all.
4. Now I was ready to sit side-by-side with younger child, confident that I knew what I was doing and that the game would really work and could engage. We stepped through each stage, mom teaching each step rather than asking child to read the book. With the engaging and colorful graphics, child would read and copy the coding text directly from the book. Also referred to describe X,Y coordinate, degrees of rotation, and graphics to find functions and tools on the Scratch screen.
We are now creating our second game. Time will tell how many of the games we will get through and whether younger child will create them independent of mom’s support. Will child revisit the early games and try out the “Hacks and Tweaks?” Will the child pick up the book for fun reading and capture the extra details found in the opening and concluding chapters and graphical call-outs? Will they read about “what makes a good game?” and “Jobs making games.”? Time will tell. We have already gotten �12.99 worth of value from the book.

Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.

An island's soul on trial along with a Japanese fisherman.

The opening scene in riveting: a small-town courtroom on an island in the upper end of Puget Sound on a snowy day. Having lived in Seattle for a few years, I can really say that his description of the residents of the island, and the geography itself (sounds like Whidbey Island to me) is excellent. Guterson's descriptions of the salmon-fishing, strawberry-growing culture, their houses, boats, and perspectives are wonderfully refreshing. Set in the 50's, it shows the honest simplicity of life in that era, yet gets into the complexity of the personalities and feelings of the main characters. Guterson displays the interactions of the local people as though he might have been one of them. Their social transactions are complex, although properly muted in 50's fashion so there is not a lot of dirty wash hanging out in public. If you like Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion stories from Lake Wobegon, you will probably do well with this book. The alleged murder of fisherman Karl Heine by Japanese fisherman Kabuo Miyamoto kicks off a fury of irrational anger at the otherwise exemplar Japanese population. Having been born in 1945, it reminds me vividly of the comments and prejudices I heard about the Japanese way back in South Dakota where most people had never met such a human -- except on the battlefield. The teenage romance between Ishmael (later the island's sole newspaper editor) and Hatsue Imada (who would finally marry Kabuo) is touching and heart-wrenching, although their conversation and insights into their situation might be a bit too high-level for their time and maturity. It is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in Puget Sound. The sudden hysteria and hatred that boils over when Heine is found dead and Kabuo is accused, jailed and charged based on very circumstantial evidence shows how fine the line is between acceptance, toleration and total condemnation when ethnic groups live together in close proximity. Guterson uses flashbacks to develop the main characters very fully to the point where you think you might be living next door to them by the end of the novel. The murder mystery aspect of this story is only a vehicle for a deep exploration into the heart and soul of humans, as individuals and groups. The ending is predictable and uplifting, but left me with the feeling that the island had a lot of work to do to get back to normal -- years of atonement and reconciliation. This story is a good read for those who allow themselves to be swept away into a beautifully told, tragic story. Real men do not cry when reading storybooks, but I strangely noticed some tears on my cheeks every now and then. This is not a formula-based murder mystery. It is a story that can stick with you and make you look at yourself as though you might have been one of the islanders.

I loved this book. It will go into my "Best Books I've Read List". I'm not going to go into the story line, enough of the other reviews tell the story, but this is one of those books that you just sit back and let it take you away. The descriptions of the area, the people, the way he describes the background on each character. This book made me "feel" the characters, the storm, the cold, the snow, hear the bullets, and smell the strawberries. The tension builds as you wonder if a person you believed in was really going to do the right thing. When I finished, I gave a big sigh, and I realized if I hadn't read it, I really would have missed something, there are few books I've read that make you feel that way, examples of a few other great books, Nine Boys in the Boat, The Storyteller, Prince of Tides, To Kill a Mockingbird, When Crickets Cry, The Light Between Oceans, The Book Thief, and now Snow Falling of Cedars joins the club. I have my Kindle read me 1 to 2 books a week while driving, but I will be purchasing this one hardcover for my library to read during a cold snowy winter day wrapped up in a blanket. Yes, buy it, sit back, read slow and enjoy.

This is one of my all time favourite novels, rife with beautiful writing

This is one of my all time favourite novels, rife with beautiful writing, rich characters, excellent description, thoughtful, poignant, at times nostalgic, at times hopefull, but Amazon's words are so lacking here.. It is one of those hard to describe types of novels that defies a simple categorization, and I hate to call it a mystery because while there is one, it is NOT a "mystery novel." They writing is poignant, there is a wonderfully written back story interposed, moral dilemmas, and of course a man is on trial for murder.

Set in the 1950s, the flashbacks go to the 1930s and 1940s, both before and during WW II. We see how WW II threw this community with both European and Japanese Americans into a tailspin and with unresolved conflict and issues still simmering under the surface. Ishmael, the protagonist and not on trial, is a one-armed vet who is the town reporter, is one of those with those unresolved issues in his life. I have read this novel more than once from the library, but finally realized I want to own my own copy, and not just buy it as a gift for someone else.

A Useful Addition to the Reloader's Library

Mr. Sweeney is a prolific writer who specializes in handguns and reloading. This book is a synopsis of his many articles pertaining to the special considerations pertaining to reloading for handguns. While it is not exactly a "step-by-step" guide that will hold a new reloader by the hand, it does cover the fundamentals of producing safe, reliable ammunition. The first part of this book covers the process in a depth that the handgun reloader will find useful. It provides greater depth than other more generalized books aimed at the beginner which also cover rifle and shotgun reloading. By limiting the scope to handguns, both beginners and more advanced reloaders will benefit from his experience and advice.

The second part examines the most common handgun cartridges reloaded today. While the steps to reload them might be similar, each one has special characteristics that must be considered by the conscientious reloader. For example, the vagaries of the 357 Sig are very different from the characteristics of the 45 ACP.

If I were to offer one criticism, it is that while he is generous with his coverage of cartridges and different bullets, he is somewhat skimpy in his treatment of gunpowder. Specifically, while he goes into detail matching the most suitable bullet for a given task in a specific caliber, he doesn't provide the same insights into powder selection. This would have been of substantial interest to me and the cursory treatment of the subject left me wanting.

All told, Mr. Sweeney's experience and conversational style make this an enjoyable and informative reference. I would recommend it highly.

For Beginners

This book is for beginners...real beginners. I am not an expert in reloading by any means. As a matter of fact, I have been reloading for only one year, yet even to me this book is pretty elementary. The book provides an introduction to reloading breaking down by components, case, primers,...etc. It is a good book for somebody looking into reloading and want to get an idea (even in this I would not consider this book to be the best resource either), not someone who has some idea (20% or more) about reloading. The second half of the book discusses different pistol calibers such as the 9MM, 10MM, 40 S&W,...etc (dedicating a chapter to every caliber, so if this caliber does not interest you, you've basically lost that chapter in the book. If there are-as in my case- more than one caliber that are irrelevant to you, a big portion of the book is then absolutely irrelevant to you in that part). It also has loading data for the. The data is very limited compared to what you can get from a reloading manual. For instance, for a particular caliber and bullet weight (does not even mention bullet type), it lists one powder charge, while reloading manuals always list min and max loads, which provides the reloader with more options as they can start with the min load and work their way up until they get to a load that their pistol would shoot most accurately. In this manual you are given one charge only and I guess you have to live with it, or buy a reloading manual. In all cases, this book would not serve (IMO)as a reloading manual.

The book is nice to read, but you get the type of information you get from reading a magazine (as opposed to a technical book, which this one should be IMO).

This is a good supplement for anyone looking to follow-up to The ABC's of Reloading; there is a good balance of novice and advanced terms and techniques; I didn't have to re-read sections in order to gain understanding. I honestly feel that some of the background info is what has helped my develop accurate, and consistent loads.

A Clear Overview of a Complex Subject

When one considers the ideology of fascism many notions and images spring to mind: totalitarianism, nationalism, ultranationalism, racism, oppression, censorship, violence, Nazism, Para militarism, right wing conservatism, radicalism, eugenics and the Holocaust. As Kevin Passmore suggests, Fascism is all these things and not these things, as it has a mercurial nature. In fact, "...fascism, as Ortega y Gasset says, is always `A' and not `A'." (p.11)

Passmore devotes most of this text to the inter-war years where fascism manifested in its most blatant forms. Although Mussolini and Hitler have been labelled or are the most famous fascists in modern history, their brand of fascism, however, and how they developed, are quite different. For the most part, fascism is multi-layered and complex, as it attracts all genders, and people from all classes and political sensibilities. To define this elusive term, the author has attempted to reveal the specific historical context in which fascism, in its various forms, raised its head - and from these studies, similarities can be made.

What are the common denominators inclusive to fascism? According to Passmore, its central purpose is national unity. However it is a national unity in the way "they" define it. He goes on to write that all "isms", that is to say, feminism, socialism, communism, capitalism etc., particularly for the ultranationalism form of fascism, are rejected wholesale, as the entire nation must conform to the one ideal. Most common to fascism is the desire to rid their particular country of all foreigners, to ensure all aspects of social and economic life are controlled. Immigration is stopped totally and immigrants are either persuaded to leave the country or, in the case of the Nazis, exterminated. Moreover, Passmore believes that Fascist social policy, for example, "...is consciously shaped by ultranationalism, political discrimination, and racism." (p. 150)

Fascism today, Passmore suggests, continues to exist in its many forms across the globe, however, these political parties choose not to call themselves fascist as the term has too many negative connotations. The author prefers to call the new fascists, "national-populism", as they are essentially the rise of the extreme right, included in such countries as France, Denmark, Austria and the United States. In France, the far-right party, the French National Front, focuses on the "foreign elements" and the advance of socialism, feminism and immigration. Whereas in the United States, nation populism has manifested in the form of "militias", white supremacist who are radically against government regulation or intervention of any kind.

Although a brief overview of fascism and its whys and hows, for the most part, it is clearly written, easily understood despite its complex subject matter, and a text that makes the reader want to investigate further.

"Fascism has an enigmatic countenance because in it appears the most counterpoised contents. It asserts authoritarianism and organises rebellion. It fights against contemporary democracy and, on the other hand, does not believe in the restoration of any past rule. It seems to pose itself as the forge of a strong State, and uses means most conducive to its dissolution, as if it were a destructive faction or a secret society. Whichever way we approach fascism we find that it is simultaneously on thing and the contrary, it is A and not A."
Passmore's book takes the tone of this passage and writes his book re-affirming the above. He seems to masterfully handle all the problems and hazards of his study able to articulate a concept of fascism that makes room for both its modernity and anti-modernity. Not just an historical survey, it is also a presentation of common elements of a widespread ideology. This book is as fascinating as it is eye-opening. Very well-written.

In his noted 1944 essay, George Orwell argued that the term "fascism" lacked precise usage, and mainly was used as a term of abuse. Over 60 years later, "fascist" has become an epithet that is applied across the political spectrum, to Islamic theocrats, fundamentalist Christians, and the GW Bush presidency, not to mention Nazis, Marxists, and denizens of the KKK.

In this short but weighty contribution, historian Kevin Passmore explores the concept of fascism from the standpoints of history and political philosophy. He proposes an elaborate definition that distinguishes fascism from features of which it is often composed, including ultra-nationalism, anti-democratic populism, and authoritarian conservativism. Passmore then traces manifestations of fascism historically, in book chapters on Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, Franco's Spain, and Eastern Europe. He stops short of applying the term to contemporary right wing movements, for which he prefers the term "national populism." Subsequent chapters focus on the relationship of fascism to race, gender, and social class, and finally, to the current political scene.

Although carefully defined, Passmore's criteria for recognizing fascism seem unduly restrictive. Even historically "fascist" Italy, Spain, and Eastern Europe do not quite meet his criteria. Likewise, his book does not consider extreme rightwing movements in Italy, France, the US, and Russia as fascist, on the grounds that they accept free market economy, and seek to exploit democracy for ethnic and ultra-nationalistic agendas rather than to overthrow it. Thus, a "national populist" movement would not be "fascist" until it succeeds at taking power, eliminating other political parties. However, radical rightwing movements that have not gained the power to impose their will on the public at large are hardly going to announce their anti-democratic objectives. After all, even the National Socialists in Germany used democratic election to gain power.

Passmore's book essentially restricts "fascism" to established states with state-run economies, ultra-nationalist agendas, and one-party rule. Yet in reality, a radical statist movement that has taken control of a government benefits from retaining the trappings of democracy, as a way to mollify its citizenry, if not the international community. Existence of more than one political party does not imply either a sharing of power, or a diversity of views and goals. (As an example, consider the many authoritarian states with opposition parties that are tolerated because they have no actual power). Likewise, no need exists for "paramilitary violence" (another of Passmore's criteria) when the government itself has assumed power to suspend habeas corpus, spy on its own citizenry without warrant, imprison them without trial, and have them tortured and executed. Nor is there any need for such a government to take control over a capitalist economy, when that economy serves a powerful military-industrial complex that lies under direct control of the state.

Finally, Passmore's restricted focus on nation states seems anachronistic, given that transnational movements and multinational institutions now pose some of the greatest threats to democratic values and governments. If the concept "fascism" is to have continued utility, surely it must be flexible enough to recognize changing times. Otherwise, we simply coin new terms like "neo-fascism" and "national populism" in a pedantic attempt at linguistic purity.

Clearly, Kevin Passmore's "Fascism" is thought-provoking, and offers much material for consideration. As a scholarly work, it takes a conservative approach to its subject, and succeeds more at explaining patterns of the past than at mapping concepts to serve our dangerous present and unpredictable future.

This book is fairly accessible to the general reader; as one of the "Very Short Introduction" series, it is meant for the lay public. It includes 12 gray-scale illustrations, and two useful maps.
