When three best friends come together for their sorority sister's tony wedding on New Year's Eve, they make a vow at the stroke of midnight to get married within one year. As the three women embark on their search to find their soul mates, they navigate the full-contact sport known as being a SSBFDLA (successful, single, black, female dating in L.A.) and negotiate the shark-infested waters of making a name for themselves in Hollywood.
Can Trista, the hyper-driven celebrity agent, find the time to schedule a meaningful romance? Will Amaya, the sexy starlet, convince the married hip hop-label exec she has been seeing to leave his wife and slip a ring on her finger or will the NBA star steal her heart in the final seconds? After undergoing a complete makeover, will Vivian, the jaded gossip columnist, win back the father of her child?
Set against the seductive backdrop of money, power, and sex, The Vow follows these women as they discover that their desire to find a husband isn't as important as finding themselves.

Starred Review. Veteran author Millner (What Brothers Think, What Sistahs Know) has teamed with Burt-Murray and Miller (editors at Jane and Teen People, respectively) to produce an emotionally charged portrait of contemporary Hollywood with a cast of unforgettable characters. Reunited at a wedding on New Year's Eve, three 30-something sorority sisters pledge to become engaged within a year. Trista Gordon, a power hungry talent agent, will do whatever it takes to beat her politically connected colleague, Steven Banks, to a partnership. Beautiful actress Amaya Anderson, in line for her first leading role, juggles two boyfriends while focusing on toning down her flashy image. Slightly plump Vivian Evans, an entertainment journalist, remains hopelessly in love with her son's father, her ex-husband. Fortified with new skills meant to drive a man wild, the trio find their wants don't often meet those of their romantic prospects, who include a basketball star, a closeted gay attorney and a hip-hop artist. Readers will eagerly turn the pages of this edgy, sexy novel to learn what's happening next.

Meh...
By kiiamonet
So I first read this back in my twenties when it first came out and I love it. Now that I'm in my thirties, and decided to revisit the book, its kinda terrible. I mean, it's okay, but it's predictable and shallow. Vivian seems to be the only character with substance. Everyone else is name dropping who they are wearing or what they are driving. Anywho, I will continue to read it, but it's taking me a whole month to do it.

Sistah's on a mission....
By The Wifey
Three single sistah's (wallowing in their pity at being single)make a pact at their girlfriend's wedding...to be married by the following year. Hence THE VOW. What ensues is a story that covers some of today's hot topics...DL brotha's, successful sistah's, single/working mom's, unattainable men, materialism, etc.
In their quest to remain true to THE VOW, the ladies (Trista, Amaya and Vivian) find that they're looking for love in all the wrong places and in order to be loved you must first love yourself.
All in all a decent read...once you make it to the end of the book. I had SERIOUS problems with the character development and the constant dragggiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg of the story and storyline inconsistency. Some of the scenes were predictable...other times I found myself distressed with the characters and their actions.
I love a good read - and thought this would be a good one - but I could only give it 3 stars and that was only because the characters "redemeeded" themselves in the end.

Money, Power, Sex
By Yasmin Coleman
Set against the glitzy, sensuous backdrop of Hollywood, authors Denene Millner, Angela Burt-Murray and Mitzi Miller have teamed together to produce a successful collaborative effort. Meet the ambitious and determined women of The Vow; three (3), 30-something single friends. The friendship includes: the always working talent agent--Trista; the wannabee actress--Amaya; and the needs to get over her baby daddy entertainment journalist--Vivian. Reuniting at a friend's New Year's Eve wedding, these three ladies make a pledge to develop a committed relationship with Mr. Right by the end of the new year. But Rome was not built in a day, and the yellow brick road is not without a few roadblocks, detours, turns and stops and the likelihood of finding Mr. Right in Hollywood is like finding a needle in a haystack.
From hilarious and funny to provocative and poignant, these women will make you laugh, cry, shout, scream, fuss, and provide support and encouragement as they multi-task in handling their personal and professional lives. As shallow as their pledges sound, there were actually some unexpected serious moments that caught this reader off guard but also helped me to more closely connect with the characters. The situations were very believable and realistic and done in a true-to-life fashion; no over the top drama. More importantly, it was moving to watch the characters grow and realize that just maybe before they found a partner they would first need to find themselves. It is always difficult navigating the path to real love and the situations these characters faced were no different from many of the ones that readers have actually faced in real life.
The Vow is an entertaining and compelling read that was superbly executed by three different writers with three different voices and style. There is always a concern that when a book is written by more than one author that the story might not be very cohesive or that one voice might be stronger or weaker than the rest. However, one of the positives of The Vow was that the three different voices worked very well together. The separate voices helped to give each character their own uniqueness and distinctiveness and the pacing was smoothly executed. The Vow is a very entertaining and page-turning read and I look forward to other books from these authors-collectively and individually.
