About the Author
Wayne Weiten is a graduate of Bradley University and received his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1981. He has taught at the College of DuPage and Santa Clara University, and currently teaches at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has received distinguished teaching awards from Division Two of the American Psychological Association (APA) and from the College of DuPage. He is a Fellow of Divisions 1, 2, and 8 of the American Psychological Association and a Fellow of the Midwestern Psychological Association. In 1991, he helped chair the APA National Conference on Enhancing the Quality of Undergraduate Education in Psychology. He is a former President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. In 2006, one of the five national teaching awards given annually by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology was named in his honor. Weiten has conducted research on a wide range of topics, including educational measurement, jury decision-making, attribution theory, pressure as a form of stress, and the technology of textbooks. He is also the co-author of PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO MODERN LIFE: ADJUSTMENT IN THE 21st CENTURY (with Dana S. Dunn and Elizabeth Yost Hammer, Cengage, 2015, 11th Edition). Weiten has created an educational CD-ROM titled PsykTrek: A Multimedia Introduction to Psychology and he recently co-authored a chapter on the Introductory Psychology course for THE OXFORD HANDBOOK OF PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION (Weiten & Houska, 2015).

Psychology: Themes and Variations 9 ed

I use this text in teaching Introduction to Psychology at a Community college. We are on the quarter system so I use the 'brief' edition. Use the full edition with semester long classes. On line course? Use the brief edition. It is a good well rounded Intro book. Easily read and has all kinds of assist items for the student. Things like large print in color, boxed in summaries, chapter quizz and a good index. Like all professors some of my pet topics are not covered (Insanity) and I would like more from Evolutionary and Healthy Psychology. A little less on Freud. No problems have come up in reading difficulty. Students like it. With the DSM 5 coming out there will probably be a 10 ed. My only complaint is the cost. Our book store has it at $246. That is terrible!

GREAT book for an introductory class!

The material is very well presented and flows from chapter to chapter. Examples from life and previous studies are abundant and help convey the material. Checkpoints along the chapter review the concepts learned in the section. Very good use of images/graphs/data and they are usually properly explained either in the text or the caption. A few great tools for studing includes an end of the chapter multiple choice test and chapter summaries in two forms (web layout and summary of main theme of the chapter graphically).
MOST IMPORTANTLY, SAME CONTENT AS THE 9TH EDITION!! With the DSM-V out now, I believe that what the professor will cover in and intro class would be sufficient. The eating disorders and mood disorders are reclassified but they still exist. Easy stuff that should be in the lecture or at least Google-able.
Pro tip: Don't buy a used book and expect an access code. Just...no.

it's the best Text book i've ever had and Psychology is thus my favorite subject of all time in University (and all other levels) although my major is accounting. Now i read a lot of popular psychology and self help stuff, this book has laid a necessary foundation for me to understand the jargon. Another reason for my liking is that it was extremely cheap when i bought the hardcover version back in Hong Kong University 1995 : only US$ 23.3 !! sorry guys this price is only for overseas, and not saleable in US/Canada, guess you gotta buy it thru amazon.com
