Stereology occupies a large chunk of a metallographer's life, often in an intuitive sense of what a 2D image means for the 3D structure, a sense born of experience. Underwood develops the theoretical underpinnings of this metallographer's sense and applies it to numerous situations.
I came to his book because I was looking for the derivation of the degree of orientation in e.g. ASTM E 1268. Underwood came, saw, and explained: the reason for that factor of 0.571 was suddenly clear. That sealed it: I would buy the book for our lab.
[This has no bearing on the review, but the used copy I purchased arrived in good condition and way faster than advertised.]
